What should be the first game new game makers should make? I was thinking tetris, but I don't know.

I'd start with pong, then move up to tetris.

It will be hard at first, but just keep at it.
Ask at these forums if you ever need help, plus there are loads of tutorials around.

There are easier games than Pong.. Like Card Games, Text Adventures, and Fruit Machines. They are what I usually start with. But in DB it is easy to adjust some of the Demos and things to make Flight Simulators, and such. But if you are using snippets, and examples it is important to understand what they do.

Space invaders is also a good one to start with. There are hundreds of variations on the theme so you can make it as complicated as you want.

Pong and Tetric are WAY too hard to begin with! I'd start out with a text adventure...

indi's game is a real good one

The very first games I every made (on Qbasic) were text games. It would go like this:

Some description setting the scene and a life-threatening dilemna for you to make a choice on.

A selection of choices.

If you make the right choice, you advance to the next part of the story. If you make the wrong choice, you die and must start from the beginning.

Trouble was, a single mistake was fatal (and they were mostly trick questions)

The first game I ever made was Echesketch in QBASIC. Maybe start with that and then add special effects such as dials, and shaking the screen.
