Anyone know where I could buy a laptop that can run DBP games for about 800 pounds?

And what's with all the carrots? What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?

well to be honest you won't find anyone much cheaper for laptops as they are by nature expensive... but you could try Watford Electronics or Time Computers UK

Try http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk might give you a few ideas, don't know how good the site is or if it's upto date.

You could also try second hand but personaly I would only bother with a second hand laptop if it was very cheap and I new where it came from and how it was treated.

Yeah, I bought my last PC from Watford. Are pretty decent for the price. Evesham are also pretty good. Also seem to have a better range of laptops. Note at Evesham they have some nice AMD Laptops for around your price, but the graphics aren't explained. Has nice memory and HD, but doesn't go into the graphics side. Essentially there isn't much you can do about the graphics once you have a laptop (I've hunted around without any success). So getting a lower spec with a Gforce 4 Go is the best bet, and then upgrade the rest later (cos you can). Annoying though as the specs of the AMDs look better than the Intel Cellery models for the price, but have that annoying "upto 32mb of memory". ie. shared memory from the motherboard. ie. crap. Get a GForce 4 Go with a laptop if you really want to play decent games on it.

Cheers

This laptop looks good enough
The only thing I'm not sure about is the graphics card.
I have one game in particular that needs to run on it. It runs at 4/3 the speed required on my desktop, which has a 1GHz Athlon processor with 256Mb RAM and a 32Mb Geforce 2. Will that computer work just as well?

Graphics card in that laptop is a bit dodgy. It shares ram with main system ram (upto 64mb) and laptop is primarily targeted towards business users. It's my guess that playing games on it or using DB on it will be pretty poor to say the least. The price of just over £600 is far too cheap for a games machine. You need to spend at least 900 pounds to get a half decent gaming laptop.

Don't do drugs kids. There is a time and place for everything. It's called college.

Make sure the graphics card is up to date the best ones are the radeon 9000+ and the geforce go.

The radeon mobility M6 (7000)or lower do not support hardware transform & lighting which newer games are starting to require. Make sure you get at least 7500.

And don't buy a dell (very long story).

If it ain't broke - try harder.

I finally got one. I got an Advent with a 2.6GHz Processor, 512MB RAM and a Radeon Mobility 9000 graphics card. Not bad for only £1000!

If you know what a "mousepad" is then use your heid and work out what a mousemat is. Where did this discussion about calling them mousemats come from anyway?

Anyhoo, this laptop runs PinFoot fine and even has spare memory to play 11 ChampMan leagues at the same time! Why on earth you would want to play them both at the same time is anyone's guess. (especially considering you need a massive resolution to play CM4 in Windowed mode!)

"And don't buy a dell" - my brother spent about half an hour yesterday trying to convince me to look at dell. I gave in and now I see what you mean.

I know £1000 is a bit over budget but since then I got £100 at the school prizegiving (£10 for general excellence, £15 each for Computing, Maths, Physics and Chemistry top-of-the-year prizes and £30 for School Dux) - Thank God I go to such a thick school!

I am now posting from my laptop

I've finally got it set up to use the internet. In fact, at the moment it's set up just like a desktop - I'm using AC power, borrowing my desktop's CRT monitor (so the TFT will last longer) and using a mouse. The only problem is I keep forgetting I'm using my laptop and trying to type on my desktop keyboard. I'm just a few steps away now from being able to sell my desktop ...

wtf you on about Solidz? Look back a few posts.

Now I've even borrowed my desktop's keyboard. When it's set up on my desk it's just like having a smaller, quieter desktop with twice the processing power, twice the RAM, twice the Video RAM and a more up-to-date graphics card. Except I can carry it about in my bag.

I can't really compare it to anything else: I haven't yet found a game that doesn't run full speed
[edit] Except that CM4 kept running out of memory - I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del and the Page File usage was 1.5GB! But for some reason the saved game I was loading ran on my desktop [/edit]
Oh, and by the way, I don't think I mentioned, it has 64MB dedicated graphics memory as well.

My desktop has a 1GHz processor, 256MB RAM and a GeForce2 graphics card with 32MB graphics memory. My laptop kicks its ass in every area, but I can't really get rid of it until I either stop playing an incredibly addictive network game of CM4 with my brothers, or find a way of networking my laptop to the CM4 server downstairs. Either would probably piss my oldest brother off since he spent ages switching the network card in the server computer and setting up the LAN, and then even more time when my other brother moved up to Glasgow and he had to set it up to work through the internet.

By the way Graham, did Tomi Petrescu play any games for Leicester last season, because I've got him in CM4 and he is absolutely top class. He's scored 12 goals from 18 games in the First Division!

Well I normally just throw a dice to choose a team. I ended up with Leicester and Dickov was injured at the start of the season so I played Stevenson. At half time I brought Petrescu off the bench and he was brilliant. He scored on his debut. Then in the network game I'm playing with my brothers I went Wigan (we all started in the Second Division) and at the start of the second season I signed Petrescu. It cost me £250K to sign him and I had to pay him £11,000 p/w! But I've managed to get it down to £6,000 p/w now. He scored a hat-trick in his fourth game for Wigan! The youth players in CM4 seem to be a lot better than in previous versions (except Willie Howie). I got a 15 year old keeper out of the Wigan youth academy. He's the second highest rated keeper in the First Division and he has 20 for four of his stats and 19 for six - and he's just turned 16!
