How dark is your screen?

Mine is totally different from my girlfriend`s. It is difficult to say what a dark ambience setting is. What do you see on the screenshot? How dark are the objects? What is clearly visible, what hardly?

On my computer there is darkness except for the yellow light.
On my gf´s computer everything is visible. The door is dark brown, e.g.

Everything is visible on mine as well, however my previous monitors were much darker. Perhaps it's time to replace yours as well.

Best.

I'm sorry, my answers are limited. You must ask the right question.

I have a 19" Iiyama from 2004 (normal screen).
My girlfriend has a Samsung 19" flatscreen, from 2004 or something.
But if your monitors are light as well I will have to decrease the ambience and manually increase it with the , and . keys on my computer.

It´s really difficult. How do you create a dark game with hardly visible walls? A creepy atmosphere? On one monitor it`s too bright, on another one it´s too dark. This screenshot has an ambience of 16. On a 10 setting it is still not really dark. On my computer I can´t see anything with 10.

The first picture was black except for the small bit of light at the end...

For my Doom3 demo I'm going to include a screen during the loading sequence which will have a grey box which I will recommend people adjust their brightness settings to so the box is visible to ensure that everyone experiences the intended ambience in game.

All games companies have to do this and is probably the best way of solving the problem for now.

If you are using a half decent Nvidia / ATI graphics card you should download the latest drivers for it then use the graphics card display control panel to adjust the brightness / gamma etc as required.

I could see everything in the first pic. Perhaps some piece of calibration before the game begins? Like having dark text on a slightl y darker background and asking the play to adjust the brightness until he can just about see it?
