If I want to use a font that others may not have, can I put the font in the same dir as the 'game', instead of windows\fonts?

Obviously it would have to be included with the EXE etc. But I am wondering in what sequence windows searches for a font. Will it eventually look in the current directory where the rpogram is?

I don't think you can use fonts in that way, although I don't know for certain. I believe that fonts need to be 'registered' in some way with windows before they can be used.

There must be a way as the game Asteroids by PneumaticDryll has a 'jedi solid' font in the game directory that somehow gets installed into your windows fonts folder. How he does it is anyones guess!

By moving them into the windows\fonts folder, they get installed. Maybe you can just move them from DBPro before trying to use them.

I've just had a look into it, and it really is that simple

Just locate your fonts folder and move the file there.

A list of fonts are also located at
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Fonts" in the registry. You can make a new string there named the system name of the font and with a value of the directory (if not the windows folder) and font file name. It's much easier to copy it into the font folder though.
