Heh, you own Maya already? I don't think so.

If you know how to model and already own Maya, get it.
If you don't know how to model and don't own Maya get Blender.

for cheap or free moddeling get wings3d (free), others may say milkshape.
Delgine is free as well.

to be able to model (to know how to use it)... if your planning on buying it why don't you search for a few video tutorials and see how it works first see if you understand the concepts they cover.

That's only an upgrade. You need Maya full first. Learn to model with Blender or Milkshape before you shell out the money for Autodesk or Maya.

Hey, I found a free learning version of Maya. I don't think you can use it for anything but learning though.
