this is a simple effect to achieve just make an object to represent the sun, it doesn't have tobe a real object or even show, could just be a polygon doesn't matter...

Now all you do is apply a gradient to the screen gamma whenever the Sun is actually onscreen.

or something like that anyways ... i'm sure if you also want to know howto also have the lense flare rings, someone else will show you

could try DBCodeBase.co.uk too
hehee ... sorry for making this seems difficult but it is a very simple effect to recreate and i've been happy not seeing it in games of late cause it seemed when it was figured out EVERYONE used it, even if they didn't need it.

Lensflares are something that really amuse me, Newtek have a lot to answer for!

They do look good and are a fairly easy effect to implement, but in all my 28 years I don't think i've ever seen a 'real' one so I find it most amusing when people seek a 'realistic' lensflares.

Sorry i've nothing actually constructive to contribute to the thread but I just thought you all should know how much I laugh when I see 'realistic lensflares', if you want realism, how about some black and white dots spinning around when your character stands up because their blood pressure is too low

Realistic lensflares??? Who cares? You'd only put a realistic lensflare in a game that is supposed to be realistic. But any realistic game would NOT have lensflares, because that would imply that you are viewing the world through a camera, and not your own eyes.
Who came up with lensflares in games anyway? The sheer stupidity of it...

Well you see thats the point in just using Gamma instead, if you put on the top a camera image overlay so that any bright dots will merge to stars and turn to slightly darker spots in view - perhaps a time delay for small red spots to go from your eyes after viewing and return the screen to a slightly lower gamma based on how intense the light was to begin with that gradually returns to normal, then you'll have a fairly real looking lens flare

However remembering if you're viewing through glass you percieve the caustic rings - oftenly the shape of the rings is determined by the weather conditions & glass/transparent material type.

( incase anyone wonders why i'd be saying this, its because 7DP has a fully intergrated light Engine which will do this not just for sunlight but ALL light sources and creates Caustic Illuminations hehee - runs at 2fps right now so i think i need an order of depth node added - and certainly ain't something DBP could handle right now )

I pride myself that i don't kill...
well not without a good reason

right on rapscaLLion! Lens flares are over used and make you look like a newbie, now if you want a cool sun effect make light come in through your windows, as though there were dust in the air, for an example see Tenshu or Enter the Matrix.

I got a better alternative to lens flares which is much easier to implement...

When you look at the sun you are temporarily blinded - ie make screen go brilliant white. Simple!

I'm sure I've actually seen this in a game.

There is a kind of semi-argument that playing a game is like watching a movie, or rather playing a movie. ie if so you would get lens flare.

Like you could argue computer games are the mid-way point between movies and real life so in this respect you are allowed an element of artistic license.
