Well, a friend of mine who is good at animation and modelling and the like has created me a pistol which has an animation of kicking back. I would like this to be my pistol used in my game (he simply took the DarkMATTER pistol and animated it for me), but DBPro won't load it for some reason. He imported it into Milkshape v1.6.4 as a .3ds file, and then animated it and exported it as a .x file. However, DBPro just simply refuses to load it.

I have uploaded it to http://www.geocities.com/justin3165/pistolanim.x.

I wasn't sure if it was the model (in which case I would put it in the 3 Dimensional Chat forum) or DBPro (in which case I think I would put it here).

Is my friend just a bad animator?

The link gives "Page unavailable"

When you say "refuses to load it" does this mean the game crashes while attempting to load the model or does the game load fine but you see no pistol model in game?

The game goes back to the editor saying "Could not load object at line <blah>" or something like that.

By the way, I uploaded it as a zip file. See if that helps. The name is pistolanim.zip.

And apparently that doesn't work either. Alright, well, I'll make the index.html site a download link to the file. See if that works.

Hi there, I downloaded the file and noticed that I couldn't even open the file. I tried to open it in a program called Lithunwrap.

The error I got was:

D3DXLoadMeshFromX failed to load file.

The problem maybe the file is corrupt, or when the object was converted it didn't use a proper or wrong file exporter.

I hope that helps ya out.

Hmm. Well, I guess Milkshape 3D isn't going to work for animation, so what should my friend and I use to animate for DBPro?

And it would appear that the DirectX 9 SDK's MeshViewer cannot load it either. Damn you Milkshape 3D!

Yeah I've just run into a similar problem, I modelled a small, simple infantry mech in MilkShape3D (latest version too, 1.6.6a) and animated the legs, exported a .x file and got similar problems to MasterInsan0.
MS3D has 2 exporters for .x files, one by Matthew Scott and one by JT. If I just do a straight export on Mr Scott's and don't change any options (export meshes, materials and anims, lock root bone for anims, Frame Offset 1), DBP refuses to even deal with the resulting file, it just drops back to the editor when it tries to load it without so much as an error message. JT's exporter is more successful, DBP will load the file and a CHECKLIST command shows the joints from MS3D have been loaded as limbs (which I want), but there's no model visible. If I remove the joints and export just the mesh, it appears fine, but of course has no animation. Soyuz, you mentioned something about that mate, got any ideas?
I'm currently trying to load the mesh from one file and append anim data to it from another file, but it's still not working. The joints need to be in the mesh file for it to work, and they seem to be the problem. As MasterInsan0 says, it looks like MS3D may be incapable of doing the anims properly, unless anyone out there knows something...?

GOT IT!

OK as far as I can tell, there's an issue with textures. As in, you need some. Anything. I just made a material in MS3D, grabbed one of the texture BMP's that came with DBP for the image, and applied it to every object in the scene. I exported the model using JT's exporter, did a LOAD OBJECT in DBP and set the animation to loop, and there was my little mech moving his legs! Here's the setting I used (apologies for the size, I wanted the whole screen so I didn't miss anything)

Hope this helps!

Incidentally, the mech doesn't animate quite right just yet, his upper body tilts with his right leg, need to add more limbs to the torso!

Hmm. Interesting why it would be like that. However, I will try it. It is odd how these things work. I'm glad I'm the coder and not the animator.

By the way, I noticed the Kazaa Media Desktop icon on your quickbar. You might think about using Kazaa Lite. I personally find it a million times better than the spyware-laden KMD. http://www.k-lite.tk.

Yeah I didn't think textures would be anything to do with it but it seems that way... I've knocked out a couple more models since with these settings and they load, display and animate fine. As I say, hope it helps

LOL I'm the coder AND the animator... pity me

Cheerz for the K Lite link, I'll check it out
