Recently I went back to an old project that included using MDIClient windows called from the winapi. It worked fine in DBC 1.13 but now it fails in DBC 1.2. I swithced back and forth between both versions and in each case it worked fine in 1.13 and failed in 1.2 . The error message is attached.

If this isn't something that would be addressed or fixed, what is the consequence of creating exes in 1.13 (includes retained mode) when it comes to Vista? Will they run?

Enjoy your day.

Latch,

I have no idea what would have caused the error that you have reported. There was a good bit of work done with 1.13 before I got involved. So, it is hard for me to know what is causing the problem. There isn't anything that I did that should have effected anything like that!

As for your other question, there are problems with getting 1.13 apps to work with Vista. It writes to a temp folder located in the windows directory, which is protected by Vista. A user would have to be in Admin mode to run your application. The other issue is that Vista does not include the retained mode dll (d3drm.dll) which is required by 1.13 for your apps to run. You could always include the dll with your app's exe, but I'm not sure of the legalities in doing that.

It would appear that the dll is also required for 1.2 exe files as well. As for including the dll in your app , I believe that its perfectly fine to include it as I recall several older programs that run on any system for the simple fact that all the critical dll files that were needed to run the program were included with the software.

It shouldn't. I have tested that here, and it has been thoroughly tested by Shawn from SW3D for his Evechron Renegades game.

well I have vista OS and unless the dll is in the same dir or windows\system32 it simply wont run - To test this you have to remove the dll from both the system32 folder and (if its present)from the folder where the software is.

Odd. I'm not sure why you are running into this. I removed all references to it in the DBC source. As I said, it was also tested in depth for use in a commercial project. It fixed things completely and the Vista users no longer have to do anything special to get the game to run. I have no idea why your experience would be any different.

its probably because I have a very early build of vista - the version I have was so bad that it was shipped with a bad hard disk driver that made it as fast as a turle (until I updated the driver, and it didn't even come with java installed.

problem solved - it turned out I was using an exe compiled under the previous version so you can disregard my previous post above.
