I remember someone asking this question ages ago, but he never found a solution. The question is, does anyone know of a program to reduce the polygon count of 3D objects? Its easy to get hold of 100s of high-quality models online for free, but they're all way too detailed for realtime rendering. Any ideas?

I believe some modelling programs have the ability to do this, but they might be the really high-dollar (or high-pound, or high-whateveryourcurrencyofchoiceis) packages such as 3ds Max or similar.

3ds Max optimisation gives terrible results. I understand Maya allows you to pick which vertexes to remove by hand which would take longer, but result in a much better final model.

In Milkshape you can delete verticies and then relink the remaining ones to fill in the gaps, but I dont have the patience. It'd almost make more sense to start from scratch. Ideally I just want a program where I load in the model, choose a level of poly reduction, and let it do it all automatically until I'm satisfied.

Its just pure laziness to be honest. In the past I've made some decent models by downloading high poly models, and simply viewing them on one monitor from different angles, and then replicating them from scratch on another monitor, just using much fewer polys. It works well. Kinda like tracing.

The problem is, I have patience when it comes to coding and making all different types of media, with the exception of 3D models. Can't standing doing it. I'd go off and try and request a modeller, but we all know its going to be fruitless.

Looks like I'll have to grin and bear the pain.

I find that these guys make consistenly better 3D tools than the competition:

Download Deep Exploration from the above link and then get this plug-in to do the poly reduction. It works great:

There is a very good free Polygon Reduction tool called Progmesh.

Here's the link for it:

Enjoy,
