Well I'm new here but I read most of the posts about best modelling software etc.. but not one single one mentioned DAZ.

So at the risk of making a fool of myself... the game I'm working on requires the best looking 3D female model I can get and the animation isn't much so I can use a high polygon count I hope. Now I'm meant to be a coder not a modeller so I thought yahoo I can buy DAZ models and legally use them in a game and modify them and save myself a year's work trying to learn Maya or Autodesk and build a model from scratch. And I found everything I really wanted in DAZ, it was perfect although I haven't tried to animate my model in VC++ yet with direct X and probably Dark GDK if it can handle the polygons... because...

I can't export a DAZ file to direct X *.x format. It's got me stuffed. Maybe if I export as an *.obj from DAZ to something else that can convert to 3DS then something that can convert 3DS to X? But by then wouldn't I have lost a lot of the image quality?

Just asking for any advice or ideas? Like I can't afford to buy an expensive modelling program solely to do a couple of file conversions.

You can not use DAZ models in aplications that redistribute the model. At least not without written permission from the company.

Man I just knew somebody was going to say that... WTF?

Here is the link to the DAZ license agreement which basically says I can do anything I like as long as I don't give the actual model itself away or onsell it...

That's what DAZ does. They supply 3D virtual models for commercial and private use. It's their core business as far as I can make out.

But hey thanks for your help anyway.

Hi Sloan

Actually I owe you an apology and I'm not to big to admit it. I've been in touch with DAZ directly and you are right. They allow their models in almost any commercial use except 3D games because somebody can rip out the *.x file and take it into a 3D modelling program and steal the model by converting it back to *.obj or 3DS.

Anyway I've since discovered 3DS Max (took a week to download which is why it's taken me so long) and got totally hooked on that program and busy trying to make my own models now using some open source 3DS characters as the base.

Once again I apologise, you were quite right.
