It depends. Are you looking for a powerful modeller or one that is easy to use?

Money isn't everything. Blender is a very good modeler from what I've heard. Has a pretty large learning curve, but worth it in the end.

I hate Blender's GUI...

Hardware: nVidia GeForce 8500GT 256mb, 240gb HD Space, Dual Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz's, 512mb RAM, Realtek HD Audio
Software: 3Ds Max 9, Adobe Photoshop CS, Adobe AfterEffects CS3

ture, i havent used max mutch... becouse i despise it.

> places to much importance in primitives. becouse perfect shapes cannot exist in the real world primitives arnt much use to anybody.

> no mirge at last/ first tool, only weld at centre

> no knife selected edges tool, always cuts everything

> dus not draw back faces in wire mode

> no extrude veracities tool, only polys or edges

> no loop cut tool

> no edge loop select tool

> all the tools are hidden in overly complicated menus. instead of simple hot keys

> interface layout is not verry customisable

>interface uses overlapping windows

> material editor is unesoseraly complicated

> no obvios mirror modaling tool.

> only runs on winblows

those are my main reasons for hating max.

Funny thing is I despise both 3D Studio Max and Blender, though I say despise, I really just mean dislike using, hence I use a mix of Silo 2 and Cinema 4D - covers all of my needs (except the ones that'll be fixed with Zbrush)

So really apps are down to the users, with the price range given what choice you have to buy a new app is quite slim.

You might be able to buy, Silo 2 (modelling and UVMapping only, no animation, rendering or texturing capabilities - good thing is you have Milkshape for animation), Carrara basics (all in one 3D package, but I don't know how good it is for games) or GameSpace (doesn't render as far as I know))

There are more you can buy - unless of course you catch one of Caligari's 'massive discounts' which are held regularly - you might then be able to pick up TrueSpace 5 for $80 (approx £40)

I love Nancy DrewG, but not insert brain here

hessiess, almost all of those things you listed there can be achieved or set within the preferences.

I got Blender because it was free and I didn't have a job at the time...Now I'm used to its interfaces and hotkeys, so any other modelling app seems strange to me.

Caligari's tools are extremely easy to use. Excluding Blender, TrueSpace 5 is the best program for the price, in my opinion.

RUCCUS is right, how you can say max is not customizable is beyond me, you can change every single part of the UI and everything you said is wrong, you can extrude from 'veracities' and the material editor is very in depth, (added to that the videopost tool as well). Pretty much all of the tools can be accessed using hotkeys or the customizable rightclick menus. (and other various buttons that bring up those menus). I suggest you explore your downloaded copy of max before you start slagging it off.
Also, XSI is a brilliant, fast, well rounded program and if you can get it as a student/teacher then its damn cheap, the rigging tools are brilliant.

I started out with ANIM8OR--a free, rather primitive app. for learning how to model in 3D.
I have now upgraded to Blender, which is getting easier to use now that I actually took the time to read tutorials and the manual...lol.

You should try and find the one that best suits your needs. Don't ask 'What is the best', but decide for yourself which is the best. Download free trials, download the free software, decide which one you like best, and buy it (or keep it if it's free anyway).
Keep in mind, if you are stuck on something with your new program, there are more than likely support forums for it that you can post on.

Signatures....peh. I never come up with anything good to say in them. Ah well.

I'm with blender until I find something more powerful for a considerable price (below $100? c'mon if such a thing as blender is free then surely somethin else as good/better couldn't be too expensive)

I think you must be confused, based on the word "buy."

Your best bet based on your budget is Silo 3D - Costs about 100 euros...

[url]http://www.nevercenter.com/[url]

Silo 3D is a strictly polygonal model - that is to say, no UV mapping support, animation, or any of that jazz. But when it comes to polygonal modeling, I would say (and my professor agrees) that Silo is far superior to Maya/3DS/Lightwave. When it comes to anything else, I use Maya, but for polygonal modeling, Silo all the way.
