I found this incredibly useful little standalone app that I wish I would have known about 2 years ago. It's a file delete app. The beauty of it is that you can specify the file type that you wish to delete.

I use it to delete all the .bin and .dbo files from my FPSC user folder. You just choose a source folder, specify the file type, and it searches and gives you the result, with the option to delete them.

Anyone who has done any modelling knows the frustration of having to delete those .dbo files every time you want to test out a new change in your model, since FPSC loads the .dbo file instead of the .X file when present.

Incredibly useful! Download here, but use at your own risk, especially if you don't know what you're doing:

And a little tip that took me a second to figure out:

-when specifying the file type, put it in the format *.dbo, then save this a preset for quick future use.

No problem. The real beauty is when you have to delete all those dbo's from multiple folders like the entitybank/meshbank folders, where I used to have to navigate through tons of nested folders just to get to them. This thing will do it in one click, and it's fast!

Plus sometimes I like to know I have a "clean" FPSC folder...

You can do a similar thing with batch files...

Create a file with the .bat extension and put this in it:

del /s *.bin
del /s *.dbo

Put this in the top directory of where you want to start deleting files, and run it. It'll delete all selected files in the current directory and any subdirectories (hence the /s switch).

Thanks Benjamin, that little trick is a nice one too. I'm doing a similar thing with this app, it comes with it's own sample batch file, but has a few extra switches that give a couple of neat options.

One word of warning when using this with FPSC X9, be careful about deleting the universe.dbo file. If you do, you won't be able to test the last map file you worked on without first testing another level first. I think FPSC keeps uses this for quicker loading of the most recent map. I set this app up to just delete the dbo's in the segment or entitybank folder, depending on what I'm working on.

Great tool, thanks! I wonder why FPSC creates .dbo files at all?

They load faster than .X files.

.dbo is a DarkBasic object file, and it can load much faster. It includes alot of things with the model, such as (I think) the texture and the normal map.

Sure. The good old DOS commands still work ...

Of course you can run a Search for a folder and put *.dbo or *.bin. Then just delete the search results.
