I dont know what the problem is with 3d canvas pro. But it definatly has issues. I paid good money for this product, only to realize that it is un-usable. I have a good computer. 3800+ dual core, 1.5gb ram, 1900xtx radeon 512mb.

LIKE THE TITLE SAYS -----SLOW PILE------

I definatly got robbed here. I\\\\\\\'ve never said that I\\\\\\\'ve been robbed before by TGC or products. But this is just a fact.

This product is by far, the slowest pile I have ever tried to use. I am very disappointed with this.

I do not recommend this product to anyone. PERIOD.

While I have had issues with 3D Canvas in the past it's not usually due to speed.I have an Intel Celeron single processor and it runs at a good spped for me.

Please have mercy and use the search function.

Yeah, I downloaded the Free version of it a while ago and just plain 'ol laughed. It was sluggish, and I just thought it could be improved.
It isn't owned by TGC, it's owned by some company called amabilis. TGC is just a reatiler for it.
I've had much better luck with different apps. such as Blender 3D and the free programs mentioned in the showcase.

Signatures....peh. I never come up with anything good to say in them. Ah well.

It has been improved. The Free Version is VERY OLD! It is a dinosaur compared to the newest version. It has very limited tools and operations. The newer versions are much better and more stable. I've been using 3DC since the original beta version and have witnessed the performance get better and better. It still has some speed problems with very high poly counts. 3DC is not made for 100k+ poly counts. Besides, it's written using Visual Basic not C or any other high performance language. For the price it is an excellent modeler. You just have to learn how to use it correctly. The next version will be in .net so it will get even better!

You might check around.There are various releases of the free version and you might check to see if you have the latest.
The full version is faster than the free version and has a lot more features.
The speed of the application can be determined by what you told it to do.Complex stuff can slow down most programs at least for a few seconds.

I have the full version. It is still super slow at everything. It takes forever to load. To even create an object takes well over a minute. It takes well over 5 minutes to load. This is un-acceptable.

I know how to install something and I have the lastest upgrade. I dont understand why it is super slow. I have no virus or spyware or adware on my computer. I keep the maintenance up on it. It is just this one program that runs so horribly slow that it is not even remotely useable.

I am running XP home. Like I said I have a fairly powerful computer so I dont understand why this one program dosent work. Every progam that I have except this one runs a very fast speeds. I hardly have to wait on anything.

My only conclusion is that there is something wrong with 3d canvas pro. Hence this post. If you know of some magical way to get it to run at a normal 3d-modeler speed. Then please do tell.

It must be some kind of installation problem or driver issue. 3DC takes about 5 to 10 seconds to load on my system and object creation is instantaneous. I'm using XP, Athlon 64 3400+, Radeon Xpress 200 256Mg and 2Gb ram. Even on my older PC, (P3 500Mhz, El cheapo 64Mb Graphics and 256Mb ram)I get better performance than that. You really need to contact support at Amabilis to try and figure out what the problem.

I've been using the demo version for a couple of days (trying before I buy) and I have to say it is a nice tool, simple to use with pretty good results for the money. I have not experienced any of these slow-downs that you are experiencing.

It seems to run pretty smooth for me, I haven't tested it with high-poly' counts yet but, still runs ok.

My Spec:

(LAPTOP)
M$ Vista 32bit, 1gb RAM, ATI Radeon X1150

Currently making the best FPS engine ever!
(Quick question: How do you start Visual Studio?)

i'm only running 512mb ram and it works great..it might slow a little when performing complicated tasks but overall this is the best modeler on the market for the price...you might need to see what all you are running from your start menu that is using too much of your computers rescources...the computer you described should be able to run two 3dc programs at the same time...putting a warning on a product like you did could hurt a companies sales...you should make sure that it is not your computer before you make a statement that could take food out of a families mouth...this modeler is very good....

Well, I dont think its very good, for the fact that it runs super slow. Im not saying its crappy or hard to use. Actually its interface I rather like, and everything seems user friendly. Its just that it is super slow. Sorry.

I agree with all of you.

@david w : 3DC Pro is a pile on my machine, too. I suspect it is ultimately .NET that is the culprit. Imagine my delight in hearing that its going there full bore soon. My video card/driver are also to blame. (At least, according to the invariable error #5 I get when trying to export a simple X file.) I have only 384MB of RAM...3DC takes over a minute to load on my machine. That has always been the case. For the record, I bought it in late 2006, and have kept it upgraded, and also I upgrade all of my software, including getting the latest (12/07) nVidia drivers. My nvogl.dll was causing me trouble in openGL apps, like Quark, QuakeII/III, anything running Python, like Blender. Those are all better for now. 3DWS is much more stable, too.

3DCanvas Pro is still unable to even export a simple cube to X format...it is totally unuseable on my system. I understand your frustration completely.

I also have VS2003...the C++.NET Standard version. When I installed that in July 2006 to this system, the .NET Framework 1.1 installation failed. No matter, I don't program in C#, and I don't write managed code, so I didn't really care too much. I tried to upgrade when registering online, but it still didn't go. As I updated XP, I got .NET 3.0 runtimes, and I think that my .NET subsystem is just plain hosed at this point, and that is causing the remainder of my 3DCanvas problems. The speed is helped with more memory, but I can only go to 512MB on this machine. Honestly, 384MB is just tons of memory, anyway! (Am I editing entire CDs, or making freakin' triangles?)

I ran across a KnowledgeBase article about repairing .NET, but that does not seem to be helping. I am going searching at MSDN again soon. If I find it, and it helps...I'll post a link in here if you want.

I do remember making that whale without it crashing, so I have hope that I can get it sorted. It really sucks because I want to make models for 3DWS now that it is working. I want to retool my pipeline so that I can wind up with bsps from 3DWS eventually. Not having a modeler means not really having anything decent to put through it, however.

Also, about Amabilis in particular...I wrote them about this issue and got what I felt was a sincere and helpful reply from Richard with actual steps to take in order to try to fix it. So, I don't feel ripped off, just...I don't have the really cool modeler I thought I did anymore, nor do I have money to throw at the problem.

Okay, I have downloaded the latest 3DCanvasPro, version 7.1.1.2 and now I am happy to report, it works.

The first time I tried to export the cube, it asked me a new question, "Include root group animation? If you are not sure, answer yes." Knowing better (there isn't any animation information...its a simple cube.), I took the advice, and it failed in the same way.

Next time, I answered no, and it worked fine. Then, I noticed that 3DCanvas Pro now exports to COLLADA. Well, now my money is twice as well spent.

No FBX, but COLLADA support is better than fixing the X export, imo.

I noticed that the latest XP updates have eliminated the remove buttons from almost all of my installed software in Control Panel, and of course you cannot uninstall .NET from that place, either. I did manage to remove the latest fix for IE7, which involved Outlook in some way. I don't ever use Outlook.

It also loads much faster now. I think that the latest 3DCanvasPro and the latest video drivers will go a long way in your case, too.

I remember when 3D Canvas was released and back then it was even SLOW. As I recall before Amabilis partedered with TGC I heard that the software was apparently written in Visual Basic and rumors were that this was the culprit for causing the slowdown.

I have only taken (1) semester in Visual Basic and I guess I could believe that this could be the issue, but who knows. I use Milkshape 3D or my student copy of 3DS Max

If a program runs slow, its not based on the program itself per say.

I'm pretty sure if you are having trouble with a program thats loading slow, or not responding fast enough, that its because your computers specs and hardware are a little older.

The computer I had before the one I am currently using would take for ever to load programs and the programs didnt run very well on it (it was a Celeron 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM, and 64MB Video card)

Then last year I got a newer computer and all the programs that gave me problems before have absolutely no issue now (its a Pentium Dual Core 3.00GHz, 4GB of RAM, and a 1GB Video card)
