[EDIT] The 8.1 update drivers work with my card now. Everything works. [EDIT]

I have:

Quad core 2.4 ghz
ATI HD 3870 512 mb ram
2 gig ram

I run UT3 (and oblivion) perfectly on maxed out settings, but fpsc x10 has some real difficulty.

A simple level runs perfectly, shaders work great, the water is neat, and all is smooth and runs well. But then I add an enemy or a friend entity, the test level freezes and I have to manually reboot my computer.

When I hit test level button, the level editor compiles and a minute later it's ready. So I hit the ok button and the test level runs. Everything is fine at first. The game is running, no slow downs, I'm getting a good 297 fps.

Then I walk into the other room, where I put an enemy character, that one fat ugly zombie creature from the default library. As soon as I start shooting at him, the game freezes and I can do nothing.

This freezing happens almost every single time when I see a character entity. Sometimes the freezing occurs several minutes later.

Ive updated to the latest catalyst driver 7.11. I have direct x 10. I was probably going to try and update to direct x 10.1 (if it's out yet) later tonight.

So far fpsc x10 looks and plays very well. Obviously I can't have any fun yet because of the crashing, but I look forward to getting it working.

Any help or solutions would be appreciated.

NOTE: I looked on the forums to find if anyone else had any similar problems but everyone who has an ATI card seems to say they run x10 just fine. Also, apparantly, nobody else has a 3870. They have the 2000/1000 series.

Have you set the test build settings for quality for the highest or lowest? Try the lowest quality and see if that helps you play through your test levels. I have only tested 8800 Nvidia cards and have had great success so far.

"TGC Tested Cards At 01/11/07:

* GeForce 8800 GTX - ForceWare 163
- 100% compatible and recommended

* GeForce 8500 GT - ForceWare 163
- average performance with most effects switched off
- slow with all effects switched on (not recommended)

* ATI Radeon 2900 XT - Catalyst 7.8 & 7.9
- known issue : test game runs, but screen can switch to black
- known issue : random freezing - hard lock in driver

* ATI Radeon 2900 XT - Catalyst 7.7
- known issue : under powered in performance and odd 3D overloads
- known issue : mipmapping corruption, no freezing or hard lock

USER Tested Cards:

* 8800 GTS 640mb - Works great
* 8800 GTS 320mb - ForceWare 163 - All ran very smoothly

Untested Cards:

* GeForce 8800 Ultra
* GeForce 8800 GT
* GeForce 8600 GTS
* GeForce 8600 GT
* GeForce 8400 GS

Minimum Specification FAQ:

Q> I have a minimum specification machine and want to run X10 as fast as possible, how can I do this?

A> There are a number of measures you can take to ensure you get the fastest performance. The first major change should be to switch off all refraction effects in the level, by going to the X10 effects menu and moving the slider bar to zero for window and water refraction. You can also switch off reflection, shadows and bloom in the same way to increase performance. You can also reduce the windows desktop size so that when the X10 engine runs, it uses a smaller display resolution. The smaller the resolution, the less work the pixel shaders have to do and the faster your game level will be. You can also watch the resource meter to see what happens during your level, and respond with the correct level optimization based on which resource maxes out. See the user manual for advice on how to do this.

ATI 3870 card is the latest and the greatest. It's better than 8800 Nvidia cards. I seriously doubt that my card's power or performance is the issue.

I did test the lower settings, but it still randomly crashed.

It almost feels that tgc rigged fpsc x10 to not work with ati, as if they have some deal with nvidia to cut ati out of the competition. Or fpsc x10 just simply does not work with ati, at all.

But if either is the case, I might want to rethink developing games with fpsc x10, because if the games I make will only work on nvidia cards, then that cuts the marketability of my game right in half. I wouldn't be able to give my game away to ati card owners.

I don't think sales that are swayed by TGC would even make a dent in ATI's figures. I think they just needed to pick some model/manufacturer as a base. So they went with Nvidia.

Well, I have news from my HD 2600 XT. When I first tried a FPSC demo that I got here in the forum It crashed (I had catalyst 7.10, but tought I had 7.11) but now with updated drivers it doesn't. It runs at very good fps, at least for me more than enough - 40 to 50.
I think this may be good news for us Ati owners, and it probably means that maybe in the future we all can have fun making games with FPSC X10.
When my FPSC X10 arrives, I'll update with screens and more tests. Hopefully, all will turn out good.

The card does perform better than the 8800 nvidia series. I guess it just doesn't work so well with fpscreator... yet.

I'm glad to hear that 7.11 drivers work with your card. Hopefully the next update to the drivers will work with my card and fpscreator.

The great thing is 3870 is cheaper than the 8800 (i got it for 50 bucks cheaper), and it performs better. If i had to do it over again I'll still choose ati over nvidia. I've always had better performance and my card would last for many more years. While nvidia cards would break for me, or get quickly outdated and unsupported.

well instead of 'hearing' if it's good or not, read about it. look at the benchmarks it gets and stuff. if its not better than the 8800 then its just as good for less of a price WITH DX 10.1 and SM 4.1 (for the new vista service pack 1) , and nvidia currently has neither or those.

Besides that I've never seen such improvement on drivers and card performance like I've seen in my HD 2600 XT. Ati is making real improvements on drivers and not just "updates" with no use.

Full support for FPSC X10 has to come soon, as much of us have Ati cards that run newest titles at hi detail and speed, so there is no excuse for them to crash with the program.

This is the demo I found here in the forum running on my HD 2600 XT. Besides this one the only thing I ran was the Tech Demo that ran great(except for the volumetric smoke, that had great fps drops. But I've talked with S4real and he told me that has been addressed in the final version, so maybe I don't run into that problem no more.)

ok, now with the 8.1 driver update, my ati card works just fine. I just have to turn shading off completely. If the shadows are on, then there is tremendous slow down. When the shadows are off then the engine runs smoothly even with 20 enemies and 20 friendlies blasting each other to bits.

So now I am happy. The graphics look great, shadows didn't look very good anyhow so I won't miss them.
