It is a screenie grabbed of the model and then cropped, new background and mock-up shadows. Since my modeling program can't render anything. Could you post if you like the models and textures?

What about the textures, they are not simple.

No offense but the textures kind of are simple as well. You dont often find things that are perfectly clan in life, a lot of work could be done to dirty those models up. Add a crack in the bowl or some scratches on the inside. Add dents and smudges and splashes of mud on the barrel, right now the barrel looks more like a can.

But you also have to realize, the texture isn't everything. Yes, textures play a big part in how models look, but you should still aim for things a little more complex than a cylinder and a deformed cylinder. Afterall, would it be impressive if I posted a screenshot of a plane with a texture of the monalisa on it, and called it a portrait?

thanks, but I don't know why the first pic is dark, it' fine on my computer.

Well, I'm more of a texture artist than a modeler but you have some points. The barrel is scratched and dirty though, take a closer look. It is supposed to look relatively new, I will make a grundge version as well.

mabie its becouse i actually took the time to calibrate my monitor

http://www.photofriday.com/calibrate.php

meany LCD displays come completely un calibrated with all the setings on max. this results in flataning of black shades and too much contrast between light shades. thay also tend to drasticly oversaturate reads

So you think that because you made a semi-realistic human model and a few chairs that you can be condescending to every new modeller that posts here?

Sorry to tell you but I'm not new to modeling. I have been doing it for about eleven months but I have to agree with you.

How is he being condescending? What he says is true; how can you criticize a cylinder? It's like someone posting a WIP game of a sphere moving on a matrix, which has been done. Sure, it involves some minor work, but what else can you say other than "try something a little more complicated"? Nothing.

You may not be new to modeling, but you still need a lot of practice. A quick search reveals your latest work, aside from the above, is this; http://forum.thegamecreators.com/xt/xt_apollo_pic.php?i=1366313, which seems to be a bunch of uv-mapped boxes with very stretched and blurry textures.

1. that work is old stuff I dug up, I'm pretty sure I mentioned it in that thread.
2. Look at the bomb before you criticize, it is almost top notch.
3. Don't even say that the fridge has a bad texture, it is good and people have told me this.
4. you shouldn't be talking, this is your latest work.

Okay, I'm sorry about arguing. There is no doubt that you are a better modeler but these models were more to show off their great textures rather than the model themselves. Truly sorry, I went over board.

cheers, darimc.

I don't attack anyone who gives constructive crit. If you were regarding to that 2 year old goodman guy, he wasn't even posting about the models.

Of course...
Personal opinion...the base texture for the Barrel is good!
But it is a bit too bland.
Maybe add a logo to it...which is a bit torned of.

Also like RUCCUS said...
some smudge stains etc...

And its 1 color...maybe variate a little...
(for grunging it a bit up)
Like: metal, rust, and some parts a bit darker than the others...

Hope you understand what i just said.

okay, I have grudged up the barrel and added a faded logo. It looks amazing and is probably the best texture I have made. Note that you can't really see the logo because of th watermark but it is there.

Then do one. Of you say you could do that easily I want to see it. But until then, stop saying that it isn't any good.

I think it auctally looks pretty good, I think you have done a good job with that last texture.

I never said it wasn't good looking, I just said it was simple, and it pretty much is... Some dodge and burn(or the airbrush) and a gray background with a simple dirt overlay would make that effect...

The bowl should have a thicker rim to it, that bowl wouldn't be able to resist heat. Also, the normals are rather iffy, you're getting some really hard edges there. Make the bowl thicker overall, bevel the top edge, and adjust your normals, then you'll be on your way. Also, if you aren't willing to accept constructive criticism, then A) you shouldn't bother posting your work and B) you're only hindering ability to become a more skilled artist.

If you still need a look at a barrel texture, heres one I did...only its made of wood...

In Maya 3D Viewport (ie. not rendered)

UV Map

The Wood texture I used as a base (of course, highly modified in photoshop...

Good luck, continue posting your work and open up to criticism, you'd be amazed the benefits you get from listening to others opinions and trying them out on your work.

Hey, thanks for the comments. I will work on the bowl a bit to. I am open to constructive crits but that was not what that guy was giving. Anyways, that is an amazing barrel texture. I am going for a metal style, could you maybe tell me if you like the latest one? Or tell me how to improve it.
