I have made my own OS, but I'm currently trying to get the GUI working, which is a pain.

And, I'm one of those "kids" you speak of. Its great fun just messing with ASM and C together. Its amazing what could be done, if...if my GUI worked ^^!

right now i've got BeOS & BeOS Max so i'm kind a drowned happy bunny.
i'm not entirely sure about the FreeDOS its a little wierd getting used to - there is so much for so little.

(^_^) hehee well i'm sure i'll have something basic working by Christmas ... don't have much free time to put into something like this. Probably would be better to team up with someone else here and work on it once i understand enough, don't wanna just create a DOS clone but not entirely sure what that would be exactly lol

Yes. But being a n00b and trying to do that is TOUGH. Before I did that type of "stuff", I made 3 basic programming languages, many programs, and also tried making unique games in C++.

THEN I went on to the GUI.

Anyways, check out:

Black Sun Research Facility (i dont have link search on google)

They have *many* *many* tutorials, they are bound to have a GUI one in there.

HL - Im assuming Half-Life. I know somebody on GameSpy that had difficulties persuading themselves that their sole purpose in life was not to become a Black-Mesa Scientist

Anyways, for those that got the Bloodshed Dev-C++, what version do you have. I just downloaded the Beta Version (4.9.8.1 I think) but they still have the older version on the site. I just downloaded it because it was the most recent, but I wan't my compiler to be reliable, not some updated program still in testing. Which version did you guys all choose?

Unfortunately, most of the books available are based around the 'Professional' IDE's and compilers like Visual C++ or C++Builder, so it's not easy to suggest a book that you can use without difficulty.

fair enough ... why not help out with one of FMTau's titles, then you can have a game under ya belt - grab a lil cash in the process then perhaps help us tinker with something that we know almost nothing about either
i'm sure puffy would love some help developing a karma interface (^_^) - and you'd become more of a forum god for it lol

suppose ... if you want the Karma 1.3.0 engine to work on you own then i can give you access to it.
i don't like working with others much either, however there is only a finite amount of me to go around knowing that atleast a little work is being done rather than none seems like a good deal to me, and its always good to have someone who is working on exactly the same thing as you so that you can bounce ideas off of.

Both... i'm working on Shader based version for my Dx9 Game and Puffy is working on a DBPro interface - but we're both using 1.3.0 as the base

they've still not got back to me in like 2 weeks what we're gonna be paying for the license for DBP, i mean the standard deal is $50k per title per format ... well DBP is technically a single title and is technically only for the Windows Format.
but there in lies the problem cause it'll be for a programming language and resold under the same scheme of - you make money from it, then you license it else you can use it free

the manual is as thick as phonebook though so puffy is just doing alot of readin atm lol
if you wanna tinker too i can email you the username & password (as soon as i get sent a newone cause i forgot the old one (again))

pitty .Net and the Windows Sockets don't actually use them anymore, they're just there for legacy - i say pitty cause they were more stable and better at handling large data.

Microsoft don't really know what they're doing when it comes to networking ... it is improving each new OS - but its still a far cry from Novell & Unix

I have no problems with Unix network code - however, I've always found Novell to be rather dodgy in that department.
