How To Sell A Home Made Game!

I’m sure that there are many-a-ways to sell a game, but I have come up with a few ideas of my own that can help sell a home made game that you have made.

1. Friends, if your friends want a special type of game/map for practicing on or playing than you can make them a game/map for a small price.

2. Flea Market, this is a great way to sell your games and a very good one as well, although it may take up a whole afternoon you could sell about 10 games in an hour for $10.00 ea.

3. Garage Sale, if you’re having a garage sale than just stick in a few of your games, and the good thing is is that if you run out of games you can just go copy another.

4. Posters, if you make a good poster than stick it on a notice board at your school or on the streets, *and if you want them to contact you without coming to your house or finding out any details just make an e-mail on hotmail and get them to e-mail you than post it to them.

5. Web Site, making a web site can be very easy and doesn’t take long I made one in 4 hours witch has sound games and cool animation. *.

6. Forums/Advert Banners, if you get the right banner making tools (from pc magazines or buy and probably for download.) than go onto Google and ask them if you can put a banner on their site they might let you. You could also put an advertisement in the yellow pages.

7. Demos, if you take out the first level of your game and put it on a CD or on the in internet on your web site, trust me if you make a good enough demo than your games will sell.

8. Trade Me/E-Bay, this is a realy good idea, it's cheap, easy, and a whole lot of fun. all you need to do is burn to a disk make an appealing game cover than stick it in an old cd case and sell.

Thanks!

if is really good get it published and sell in a store like any other game ( not likely with fpsc x9, but with x10 sure you could do it! )

why not? i'm sure if you talk to the manager of your local game store, you can work something out to get it on the shelves. in theory, it isn't hard.

Yeah, good luck running your laser printer to spit out manuals and case covers and buying the cases. Anyway, publishing means you need a publisher (or self-publish). Self-publishing requires you keep taxes in mind. Buy enough cases for the game and have a local print shop for cases and manuals and so-on. Too much hard work for a game that's mostly a bunch of polygons and large textures. By today's standards publishers will most likey want more than FPSC X9 or X10 can deliver.

All considered, please sell on a site

Hi!

It is possible to sell in a store, i went and asked a guy at eb games and he told me that to get it in his store you would need alot of games and it will cost you a bit of cash.
the only way to make money from it in the shop is if lots of people buy it and you would get around 80% of the sale.
he said it would cost a few hundread dollars, so if you want to sell it in a shop than you can but make sure you have the money and a realy good and appealing game to sell.

Thanks!

Like Vehicles.

So there's like 0.0001% of FPSC games that may be appealing to a gamer world that plays games like Halo 3 and Bioshock, which are run on Unreal 3.Also, your average indie developer round here,(don't flame me if i'm wrong),doesn't have £00's to just spend getting a game published, unless it was like BOTBOTB and he loved his creation enough.

But, the truth of the matter is at this current point in time is that the enemies are stupid, the engine in-efficient, and the FPS is hideously low.......

@Shide - yes all good points. However concerning your post about selling in a store. In some countrys unless its classed as a hobby and selling limited amounts (something that may be incorrect), or will lead into becoming a registered business

.

@Keo C - good post.

@coffee grunt - also a good post. Yes I agree, some people could be interested in a fpsc game because they dont play new-gen games, or looking for in-game extras/gameplay. Then on the other side theres the expecting of a game to handle like other newly released games. Its a hard market i guess if anyones thinking of selling a game.

You don't need cases and print and manual and all that jazz.

1. print and sell your games in a cardboard sleave.
(like they do with demos and some games) These are ordered online for a very cheap rate.

2. Place the manual as a PDF on the game disk.

i think if you could put a year or two ( or more ) into your levels, business deals, publishing, etc. ( with x10 ) you could get it in a store. it all depends on 3 things: 1.experience 2.dedication 3.imagination. those three things are what gets any kinda game on the market. dont argue with me unless you ACTUALLY think there is a fault in my explanation, NOT because you dont think you're good enough and tryin to rag on me to make yourself feel better ( not saying you would, or anyone has, just make sure you're tellin me off for a good reason )

ok!

I understand that selling a game in a shop will cost you a whole load of cash and thats why i havn't put it in the 'great ways to sell a game' list, but only in a post.
now although it can be costly sometimes its the best way to go. you may have to pay extra taxes but if your game keeps selling and more and more people like it than you never know what can come next.
so all im realy trying to say realy is that it is possible just probly for some people the hardest.

Thanks!

@Shide - Just in case you thought my post meant otherwise, good list.
I just thought I would add some info for users, as its been covered before here.

Also to add, I wouldn't think it should cost alot of money to register a business name for handling income from a product or service (depending/location).
And as Negative Image pointed out, there are other options to keep costs down on production for users going Self-publishing, and the pdf option, which even TGC use among others.
I would say the eb games guy meant what Keo C was pointing out if someone selling a game go all out on presentation (case/cover etc.), it will cost some coin to mass produce the item. Ive released commercial media/productions and own a registered business, and selling a product to a francise, turned into having to fill purchase requests for up to 6-7 stores.
Using a professional print shop to have covers made in bulk may save on print costs, not sure on this, as it could depend where you shop, maybe there is a service online for printing covers, Ive never looked. Something users could think about.

Anyway I agree with you Shide, even though Im not sure if anyone has done it yet, or has informed the community here that they have apart from say Ertlov
. I guess we shall see.

Good luck with your future projects.

my dream ( i mean literally ) is to be the first person to put a game in the shelves made by fpsc ( x10 of course ). if by some miracle i do i will without a doubt give credit to the TGC crew. i mean, that would be just cruel. work hard to using their product to make yourself rich and not even thank them for it. i will be sure to put the names of all the TGC crew in the credits and in the begging where it shows all the companies and stuff used to do this ( yadadadadada ) it will say "the Game Creators". so i will realese my demo for free over the web. then **** to friends and family, then with enough money ********************************************************************************************************** to finaly get **************************************************************************************************** ( hah, did you really think i was gunna tell my buisiness secret )

hello little children UUUAAHHH ARRRGG HELP ITS GOT ME AAAHHHHHHH...... BBBRRRAAAIIINNS, HUNGRY.
