Okay so I'm going to be buying a DX10 video card here soon, and I'm VERY unsure as to what to get. Right now I have the radeon x1900xtx 512mb. and it runs VERY nicely, but not DX10. So I really need ideas as to what to get that will be better than my current card, I will not lose any speed in the next purchase (IOW: nothing less than 512mb with 256bit interface, or just overall, not slower in any way than my current card.)

Do you have a preference as to what kind? ATI vs NVIDIA?

I don't know if this is all that useful of input, but what the heck ...

The 8800GT cards seem to work fine on FPSC X10. Everything seems to crank along just fine. From what I've seen you are currently asking for trouble with the ATI cards when it comes to FPSC X10, which is a shame since they are a bit cheaper and the new ones support DX10.1.

well. preferably ATI, cheaper, and i've been using them for a long time. Yea, I also don't really think i'll be spending more than $3** on a video card. considering i spent $500 last year on the x1900xtx. so it makes it difficult to buy another one. i've been looking at the 3870's from ati. those look pretty nice tho....

I had the x1900 256 which as you suggest is a nice series of card and would have suited me perfectly if not for the dx10 requirements of FPSC X10.

I managed to pick up an HD 2900XT 512 which is good enough to use FPSC X10 and half the price of an 8800GTX despite a couple of freezing issues with the software.

Basically unless you've got bags of money to spend I would recommend picking up a 2900xt until the 9 high end 8 / low end 9 series of Nvidia cards come down in price a bit.

hmmm. yea, but the 2900's dont have the dx10.1. so for vista, when the service pack is out, wont support that card.??

The Nvidia's 8800GT is surprisingly powerful for it's price: the cheapest GT's cost only about 250$, while being just about as powerful as the 8800GTS-cards. Also GT appears to be the lowest power consumption and average temperature than any other that level DX10 card on the market.

The basic GT comes with 512MB memory, which is quite nice. I heard they have now released a 1GB versions as well, but I'd expect those to be a bit more expensive. If you need a DX10 card quickly, 8800GT is a quite a nice choice.

And remember that even the current DX10 cards can run DX10.1 applications. Only the latest DX10.1 effects not be shown, but what I've read most of the new features it offers are rather minor effects made to add minor details to things.

Erm

I thought that 10.1 would just be a directx driver revision which will need to be downloaded and installed.

The 2900 is fully dx10 compliant which I think is good enough.

I'd be seriously worried if they are going to start releasing graphics cards for every directx driver incrament that gets released otherwise theres not much point getting on the ladder at all !!!

Like I mentioned in my (edited) post, you can run DX10.1 apps with DX10 cards.

BUT DX10.1 will not be "update" of sorts, and is fully supported only by DX10.1-compatible graphics cards. It's just like what happened between DX8.1 and DX9, only in a much smaller scale this time.

Having both an NVidia 8600GT and 8800GT, the 256 bit engine on the 8800 makes a REALLY BIG difference. Of course the 8600GTs are 60% the price...

As for ATI, I do hope that the freezing problems are fixed on FPSC so both people who create games, but maybe more importantly those who play those games, on an ATI won't face such frustration. I hate freezes.

Just recently bought the 8600GTS with 512 MB RAM, and very happy with it on everything, such as FPS X10. It cost me $199.99 for the faster version with DDR3 RAM, and a higher base clock rate; but well worth it.

my card right now blows the 8600GT away when it comes to gb/s transfer rates and speed. the only thing it has that mine doesn't is dx10. like i said, why would i want less speed than i currently have? isnt that like, a waste?
