well one idea would be to set the camera position to random positions about the normal, e.g.
camera position +/- rnd(1)

otherwise, set the viewpoint to random coordinates (not to large though) every time the game loops to make the screen shake nicely.

Where's raven when you need him? Quick, someone needs some pixel shader advice! I don't know shit about pixel shaders, but I reckon you could simulate heat-haze refraction with those things...

Frob doesn't have a px shader capable card, that aside i've already offered one means of doing it to him but he doesn't seems to want to use it - and i'm plum outta ideas for it to be honest.

@Frobscottle

This is done by writing directly to the backbuffer I believe. Check the DISPLAY SHOWCASE example which comes with DBP.

Do you want Windows menus in your DBP apps? - Get my plugin: http://snow.prohosting.com/~clone99/downloads/tpc_menus_103.zip

Yes i would definatley do this via the back buffer using memblocks.

Just find out the req`d pos of the effect on the screen, using say screen object x etc, then workout the pos in the screen in memblock terms (ie resx*resy*4 etc) then move (or shimmer) the pixels about that position around a bit. Should give quite a nice effect id imagine. Read the tut on memblocks thingy ma bobs n have a play with it, you`ll pick it up straight away. Have fun!
