edit: Some info on why I made this thread...
Is because on the forums there is alot of "Please post in .jpg" and stuff from mods. Which must be annoying to mods so I made this thread to show newbs or members the files that can and cannot be used. And hopefully it will be helpful to all boards then just these boards.

The following work in the forums attachments...
.jpg/.jpeg
.png
.gif

the following does not work in the forums attachments...
.JPG or .JPEG due to its caps.
.PNG due to its caps.
.GIF due to caps.
.bmp
.pdn
.psd
.xcf
.dds
.tga
.tif

Files that work on these forums...
.htm/.html
.exe
.rar
.zip

-Programs that can save into these formats...
FREE IMAGE SOFTWARE..
THEGIMP
PAINT.NET
irfanview
Paint
PAID IMAGE SOFTWARE...
Adobe Photoshop
For more image links see here...
Links It has loads more links to loads more programs.

Very nice idea to make such list, because most people upload *.bmp and *.JPG and sometimes it's very annoing.

Btw, this should be a separate sticky.

you should put next to them links/information about which programs can convert the files/images ie paint for jpeg's and png's. i think GIMP converts into gif with an alpha channel as well.

Great thread here Deathead......

It's too late for Darimc now, if he'd seen this maybe he wouldn't have got banned......lol.

-=off topic=-

Anyone know why "the GIMP" is called that? It just seems to be a really weird name for such a good program.

Darimc got banned mid-December after arguing with Uman 'cos he posted a .bmp and then was adamant it was a .jpg...

also thanks for clearing up the gimp thing for me.

@ Seth Black & Nickydude:
Yeah Irfanview is great, apart from the fact that it doesn't boast the editing options without going into an external editor. It's brilliant if you want to open tga and dds files though... yeah - good call.

I was thinking that if the forum allowed it (I'm not sure about apollo) then it should accept .tga and .dds files for easy uploading of textures for viewing and stuff.

On the other hand that might make it easier for 'unscrupulous transactions' of textures. Maybe not such a good idea.

.tga and .dds are not a option in the file uploader.

Ahh, but it does. The latest version (4.10) has basic image tools, just press F12.

Why isn't this a sticky? This is an excellent guide for newcomers. Great idea Deathead.

You mean like this? http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=95489&b=21

Because people don't read the stickies.

I don't see why this needs to be stickied, it's not the most important thing in the world. Most newcomers don't bother to read stickies, and for those that post images in the wrong formats can just be told which formats are suitable.

Another point is that there are already quite a few stickies at the top of this board.

Thats why I posted this thread Benjamin! To stop noobs to post in the wrong format its a problem and people doesn't want to keep telling them its in the wrong format all the time.

Its the most helpful thing to stop wrong formats being posted.

Ei, that is true. But still its a helpful thread.

But why would they read this when they rarely read stickies anyway?

@Ben: The quote you posted is my post responding to your "We can just tell the noobs its in the wrong format." Thingy, and yes that is not your exact quote but its the basic outline of its meaning nothing to do with it being stickied.

If we renames it to get free stuff here, that would attract the noobs.......

But then everyone would get confused, and feel slightly cheated...
