I posted this in team requests as well, but I realised that this forum gets more hits and this is a DBPro game...

I've been coding a console-based hacking simulator (codename: DarkCode) for about 2 weeks now and its coming along pretty well. The game requires 3 'windows':

Main console window
'Titan' window (an email/news client)
A 'player' window (a small window that displays current game time and available cash)

Currently, I am drawing these windows with the line command and they look pretty crap (essentially) 3 blue boxes of different sizes. The way the game engine works is that it places the input and output text of the game at a certain area of the screen and draws these boxes over the text (so it looks like the text is within the windows). Text scrolling, etc is sorted.

I have no artist abilities at all! I was wondering if anyone could make a JPEG or bmp which has the 3 windows on it. It must be of these exact sizes:

Total JPEG: 1024 x 768 pixels(currently the only available display mode)
Console window: 650 pixels wide x 710 pixels tall
Titan window: 300 pixels wide, 350 pixels tall
Player window: 150 pixels wide x 110 pixels tall

If possible, could you tell me the exact coordinates (in pixels) that the windows are located when your done?

I can't directly link a screenshot but click on the link below and then click the link that says 'Screenshot of DarkCode'

http://www.basementfactory.com

As you can see, its pretty bland. I need it to have a more futuristic look? Feel free to add images behind the windows, etc or anything else for that matter. I will name you as graphical artist in the credits and if I ever decide to release it....I will pay you for your art.

Thanks in advance,

Shadow

You'll be wanting the team requests forum. Besides, you'll find mostly coders here, not artists.

Okay I was wrong! I was expecting a more direct link!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can help if no one else can. However I need to know the atmosphere, setting of the game ie Is it a dark scenario such as gothic in feel? Is it modern day? Is it an futuristic setting?
What the hell is the player hacking for?

Let me know and I will prevail for ye!!!

Honestly, if the look of that screenshot is the one you currently have, I think it looks interesting in its current state.

However, if you really wish to change it, you could try to find an application that has a window like the one you want (for example, if you wanted one that looked like the Windows XP windows) and then get a screenshot-taking tool. Take a screenshot of the window maximized, and then fill black in where the other information is normally.

Another idea is to get a tool that changes Internet Explorer's internal name to something else (right now the title bar says DarkBASIC Professional :: Forums DarkBASIC Pro Discussion :: Need an artist - Microsoft Internet Explorer, but with this tool it could change to say "Titan v0.1" in place of MSIE).

Then, make a very, very simple webpage with the title that you want your window in-game to have. If you wanted a title bar to say "E-Mail - Tital v0.1" you would make a web page titled "E-Mail" (or find one already titled that) and ensure that the internal name of MSIE is Titan v0.1.

Or you could just get someone to do it in Paintshop Pro or something.

FeildDoc.

Go for what you think is right. Good point about the screenshot but I assume there is some aspect of the game we dont know! Let us know. As Ive said the atmosphere of the game is important and your front screen is crucial.

If I create something I like and I you might like It too, I'll post it here and maybe also in the thread you are running in Team Requests...

I like it! Maybe I'll do something cool too. Maybe... I kinda like it that way it is though, why not let the player choose a "skin" or in this case a color? that would be unique.

You could also use some type of computer console as the backdrop.

Look at this site for and example

Wow! Kinda of like waiting for a bus. 2 days without a single reply then 11 come along at once!! :-s

Where to start?

@Arcitect:
I am looking for something with a definite dark/evil feel to it but I also want a modern flavour as the purpose of the game centres around technology and the devasting effects of its misuse. Initially, you hack for the fun of it (like many people), but then you begin to stumble upon a twisting story involving a multinational cover-up conspiracy, assasinations and global information terrorism....should (hopefully) be interesting!

@MasterInsan0:
Using screenshots is a good idea (one that only ocurred to me last night!). The screenshot on my website (sorry about the crap link) was created by simply drawing the whole thing with the LINE command. I recently added a continuously updating gametime clock and the refresh rate was so slow with the program having to constantly redraw itself using 3 functions so I decided to use the screenshot I posted (after blacking out the text) as a .JPG and use it as the background. Net effect is that it looks the same but it proves that using an image as my background will work fine.
Very ingenous to use IE as an image for Titan...I like it but I don't want a Windows look....not ?eery enough!
I have had a go at using Paintshop....lets just say I was rather unproductive! lol. Wish I had the skills to use it properly!

@TheCyborg:
Thanks. Please, please do submit something.....the arcitect is right, creating the right atmosphere is absolutely crucial to a game. I think the current screens are practical but lack any sort of eye candy. Since this isnt a beautiful 3D game...it needs to rely on the overall feel of things and the immense amount of suspense it generates to succeed.

@Anjin san:
Please have a go, you know you want to . The skin idea is something I have been toying with...perhaps I could select the best of these entries and the player could choose which one to have? Perhaps I could include some sort of template with the game so people could easily create there own. There will be the option to change the colours (I plan on making the game quite customisable!).

@SWDave:
By 'remove the directions' do you mean the pixel specs? If so, it is NOT ESSENTIAL THAT YOU MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS EXACTLY. Of course, it makes it easier for me because my text placement\scrolling engine has all the correct coordinates plugged into it but i'm sure I can work out the pixels of other submissions. I think they need to maintain their proportions though as the bulk of the work is done in the console and (as yet) the player bar doesn't contain to much info.

@Everyone:
THANKS SO MUCH FOR REPLYING! Any more questions please, please ask. Also any suggestions please do not hesitate to make them as the game is still early in design and is very flexible. It's nice to have some interest in my game (my fiancee just doesn't understand....

Interesting i wanted to make a hacking game but i never could think of a story. I made this screen for the game and i can make it like you want.

Quote: "
Main console window
'Titan' window (an email/news client)

"

Here is the screen tell me if you like it then i'l make it like you want it. LOL (sorry for my bad english)

I like the blue window..its got a nice polished look to it. Not to keen on the green netting background though. I would definitely appreciate it if you could make a mock-up with 3 windows..perhaps changing the background?

Thanks again,

Have just replaced the screenshot....changed the font and might as well use it to show off how you connect in DarkCode.
Follow the link and click on the screenshot link on my frontpage

http://www.basementfactory.com

I can't link directly to the page as the no matter what page you view on my website the address doesnt change (something to do with web forwarding I think!?)

Sorry Redostrike! I haven't decided on using them yet. They are excellent but I wanted to give the others who posted at the beginning of the topic a chance to come up with some material and then decide. I changed the font coz it was simple and the effect is much better (I think).
