Ok.lets see
Thing you can use to model are...
Blender-Free
Milkshape-30 day trial
Maya-Expensive
Metasquia-free
Things you can use to texture...
Paint-Comes with pc
Texture Maker-free

Adobe Photoshop-Expensive/30 day trial with adobe photoshop what i do is download it and then when the thirty day trial is up photo shop locks but it also comes with a software called image ready which is what i use it is just like photo shop except missing a few things and it is free if you download photoshop I highly recommend it.

Also to texture is GIMP:

Google it, it's free, only one step below Photoshop, the best on the market and has pretty much the same features!

-=EDIT=-

Don't know where you got Texture Maker from, 'cos it's definitely not free!

thanx guys im gunna av a crack at blender 1st, it looks great for a free program.
off topic ... (i have used google sketchup in past for a game called "crashday" but i didnt like it and dont have it anymore).
As for textures i think ill master modelling before taking it all on at once.
Thanx again!
