For my communications tech class I've been given the task of making a really in-depth video tutorial on "how to model" (as my teacher put it
). Obviously there is no definitive way to model, everyone has their own techniques and styles, but I think I've come up with a good outline so far with how Im going to cover it. I dont think he expected me to go into this much detail, but its the only thing Im being marked on for the whole year so I figure Ill go all out.
Our school has a good library of tools available; 3DS Max 8 and Photoshop CS mainly. I figure Im going to start off teaching in Wings 3D since its a lot easier to get to grips with the whole modeling mind-set, then move onto max for uv mapping, rigging, texturing, rendering, etc.
So a rundown of how Im thinking of handling each video "section":
Tutorial Steps:
Clip 1: Intro to Wings (where to download it, what it does,
how to use some of the basic features).
Clip 2: The terminology (what edge loops and edge rings are, etc.)
Clip 3: Making a Bowl (Teaches: Extrusion, scaling, and movement of
verts and edge loops.
Clip 4: Texturing (make a sphere, texture it with a smiley face).
Clip 5: Box-Modelling: Making a very basic person and texturing him.
Clip 6: Cylinder-Modelling: Making an advanced person and texturing him.
Clip 7: Intro to 3DS Max.
Clip 8: 3DS Max Modelling Basics
Clip Add: UV Mapping / Texturing in 3DS Max.
Clip Add: Rendering in Max
Clip 9: Animating a ball bouncing with key-frames in max.
Clip 10: Intro to bones and bipeds.
Clip 11: Rigging bones to a mesh.
Clip 12: Rigging the simple human.
Clip 13: Animating the human
Clip 14: Rendering animations
Clip 15: Render Effects (normal maps, smoke, light tracers, etc.)
Afterwards I had a pretty good idea of writing up a really, REALLY basic online fighter, and allowing the other students (this video is to teach the other students) to drop their characters into a folder for the game, that they'll later be able to chose from to fight with when they run the game. I figure this is the only way I'll actually get anyone to look into the tutorials, assuming most of my class is more into video games than 3D art.
Im going to take my time with this though and make it look professional. I borrowed my brother's copy of Camtasia Studio (an amazing screen recording program) and Im actually working on a story board / script for it ATM.
So any comments / suggestions on the outline so far? Any key points Ive missed?
Thanks for any input,
