Hi everyone, Im thinking of working on somewhat of a starship simulator. I say somewhat because its going to be 2d (at least for now) similar to a mac game, cant remember the name, but it had a very open ended universe which is what Im shooting for. Anyways, I would like to start an open brainstorm and my question is what features would you like your starship to have?

A 'starship simulator'? Is this the kind where you can run around inside the starship, or do you just get a pilot's view? How big is the starship? Will it have other crew members? Can you shoot or destroy other starships/bases/planets?

Let's see...
Accurate Einsteinian relativistic physics, portraying the realistic warping of the space-time continuum.
A computer which calls you Dave and refuses to let you do anything.
A Death Star style superlaser cannon.
Easy controls (easier than Frontier).
Automatic pilot for those complicated coincidental orbit calculations when trying to rendezvous with planets, and also landing.
Steam jets when landing.
Cup holders.
Swivelly chairs, especially for the captain.
Consoles which blow up showering sparks everywhere at the slightest hint of the ship being attacked.
Set the game ridiculously close in the future (i.e. 2004)

Once I was but the learner,

LOL! Smartasses You'll get the pilots view and run around in your ship. However, at least for now, it will all be in 2D. ESCAPE VELOCITY! Lol, just remembered the name of that game I was trying to think of for the mac. It will be similar in ship flying style to that. I was wondering what kinds of more advanced features people would like to see. IE beaming troops to planets and other starships, ejecting reactor cores, etc.

By the way, swivel chairs are a must!

A red dwarf game would be wicked if you could get a comedian to write the wit!

However I think a starship game would be cool, Vendetta. It has recently ticled my fanct to a fleet battle game. Of course the seriouse problem is AI verses 3D universes.

Torpedoes
Gun emplacements
Fighter support
Fleet support
Lots of Action!

One of the models I planned to work off was Janes Fleet Command which may have some inkling of what you could go for.

Hmm, Jane's fleet command has an awesome interface. That would be really interesting for a starship too. I never thought about using that kind of interface. Now you got me thinking

Thinking of Fleet Command Im wondering if I should have shields or just defensive systems. Like missles that would be automatically launched for defensive purposes and a futuristic laser phalanx. hrmm...

What have you noticed, Pneu, and how on earth can you use that against me?

Yes, the starship must have a very good protection system against possibly hacking from aliens, and from internal hacking too...

Must be able to split into at least three parts in case of critical damage.

Must not continually break down.

Good news everyone! I really am THAT good...

Now, if only someone was good at graphics, no doubt someone would be able to do a DBPro version...

must NOT have an entertainment system that nearly destroys the ship every 3 episodes?....oh! sorry! thats Startrek TNG
how about the ability to beam key command personel into potentialy lethal situations every planetfall....oh!, sorry! thats Startrek
seriously, hows about a warpdrive that takes a minute or so to initiate, so you can`t just run off when the bad guys arrive, and maybe the ability to carry fighters and cargo ships, EVA combat teams, things like that, so you could draw an enemy into the asteroids (you always have asteroids in space ) and then board em with your space marines, something like the original laser squad combat system

Vendetta

How good are you at programming? How serious r u with the realism?
What quality r u going for? Do you need a 3D modeller?

I have some ideas for creating massive universes with minimum ram usage. Let me no if you are interested. These would allow you to create names, cultures, agression etc
