edit - new version with some imperfections + a little sharper and desaturated in the warmer areas...

Whipped it up in 10 minutes in photoshop for a 3D project I'm working on for school - if you'd like it for whatever reason, here ya go Personally, will be using it on this semesters advanced texturing project, will post pics in a week when its done

If anyones wondering how I did it...
Started with a 512x512 canvas, White Foreground, Black Background - did a couple noise filters, then a motion blur filter and sharpened that a few times. That'll give you the basic "grain" look..I think I copied that into an alpha channel as well. Next I made a difference cloud layer with black background, brown foreground - I loaded a selction from the wood grain alpha layer and then copied from the different clouds layer and pasted that onto a new layer. From there i just kept merging layers down and doing small adjustments with levels and color balance and such...painted in the individual boards, then started painting in the individual details (knots, random imperfections, etc) with mostly a black brush then dodge/burn/desaturate tools. I'd make a vid but I do so much random stuff it really wouldnt make a difference - follow those steps and youll get something similiar... I think - dont really remember what I did.

John H,

Nice looking texture! Greatly appreciated.

Just a suggestion, since you're going submit it for a grade:
work on adding some depth dimension to the larger knotholes.

You should also consider adding imperfections, as it looks too clean,
to have been sitting outside in the elements.

Thanks,

Seth Black

seth - completely agreed - definitely going to be adding a lot more detail and such to the texture, this was just a first go - I wasnt even sure if I could pull off such a texture in photoshop Nevertheless, will be posting further versions later on Thanks for the comment!

That's pretty good if you made that from a blank canvas. Thanks for sharing.

John, it would look more defined if you added accent strokes and sharpen it a little. I've found those filters are best for getting wood effects.

Try it out and see what you get.

Updated - As a note, I do a lot of the fine details and such on the actual UV Map, just using these textures as a base. Take for example these UV maps for the last project I did

Mostly all of the detail in the texture was added in the UV map stage, darkening lines, adding/removing knots and other imperfections and such.

This is perhaps a better example - I redid all the color levels in the UV mapping stage here, I started with a gray wood image...

Anyhow yeah, v2 is looking a little better IMO, looks a little to warm in some areas... but the sharpen filter will do that. Anyhow - off to work

Yeah so workin' on that crate & barrel project... havent done any advanced texturing on the crate yet, just the diffuse texture, heres a shot. Didnt set camera aperture in maya so it looks a bit blurry, whatever. Tired, sleep time. Barrel will come tomorrow and normal/specular maps sometime this week.

Oh yeah, kinda made this as a joke to my roommate, mail order bridge for him

Rendered in the ol' perspective window, with high quality preview rendering on (for lighting)

Diffuse + Specular + Normal 512x512 24bit TGA's on all objects.
