how much programming experience have you got?

Hmmm. If you're very new you might try the newcomer's forum, but I'll try to assist you.

There is an add-on DLL that allows menus with buttons.

One way to create a HUD is to design the image with all of the static information already on it, and then paste it at the correct location in the code in runtime and print the variable information every loop.

Creating a selectable unit it actually rather hard now that I think of it, so using the mouse would take more skill than I possess. However, if you wanted to use keys such as 1-9 or a unit-cycling key that would cycle through all of the units, you could implement that by saying (using psuedo code...don't expect this to actually work)

if inkey$()="3" then ghost object (nameoftheunit)
..that line of code would be one way to show that unit is selected.

A real time (or even turn based) strategy game would not be a good idea for your first project. At first, try a game that consist of a model that walks around empty space. Then, a game of a model that walks around a level, without collision. Then, a game of a model that collides with the level. Keep improving onto the game until it actually consists of gameplay.

Hope that helps.

MasterInsan0 is right. Even if you have programmed before, there is nothing easy about making a Warcraft 2 clone. DBPro makes it all a lot easier than your average language, but its still a big challenge.

Like InsanO said though, you're going to have to start much smaller until you know what you're doing, and understand the magnitude of making a game like that.

The best thing you can do is buy dbpro, jump in there, try to do what you want to do, and then ask specific questions about specific problems you encounter.

Good luck

I'll tell you how I started my first project, that might help. It was a car race emulation, not interactive, simply 6 cars racing down a straight road. Not Warcraft, but the methodology is just as applicable. And the important thing is, I could see the results at the end of every step.

1. Create a primitive box and display it
2. Make it move
2a. Get the camera to follow it
3. Give a speed that changes over time
4. rewrite the code to make it scaleable
5. Do it all over again with 6 boxes, each with their own speed
6. Change the boxes for models (the police cars from Darkmatter)
7. Split the matrix into 3 - a left, right and a road
8. Texture the matrix
9. Add environmental control, such as ambience
10. Add roadside objects and start and finish posts
11. Get jiggy with the camera and create some cool cut-scenes

Thanks in advance.
All the Best,

Depends what type of menu you wish to create, but my addon DLL is purely for Windows GUI style ones. Sprites would probably be a better option.

Do you want Windows menus in your DBP apps? - Get my plugin: http://snow.prohosting.com/~clone99/downloads/tpc_menus_103.zip
