Hello all....new to forums and before purchasing FPSC I wanted to know if you could use an Mpeg or AVI video file as an introduction for an FPSC game?, could not find this answer in any of the online tutorials that I have watched. Unless i missed it...

thank you in advance...

AVI is the main file I think. Or is it .wav?

The answer in short is yes.

Though now days external applications can also play movies for you, prior to this, the setup.fpi was coded for video, and worked fine.

I've since forgotten exact code which would have changed over the version history anyways, it is possible but your going to need some time logged into doing a little coding with the available variables.

Being I use Vishnu now, and movie integration is done via the packaging, I have no reason to look into remembering the old code, but it's 100% possible with the code and variables available to FPSC.

Just to add.
Yeah you can play Mpeg clips, I have been able to play Mpeg2 and Mpeg1 clips and the result was good. And as Locrian mentioned a Avi files can be used. The sample clip packaged with fpsc is avi.

@deathhead, Yes you were right the first time. Did you mean .wmv. Im not sure.

To others seen as Im here, and sorry to bite on your post dada7,

Currently working on compression and frame size tests for clips,
A standard movie or recomended frame size i use on adobe p, is 720x576.
The clip that is packaged with fpsc (videobank/storyvideo).
frame size is 640x480.
Format .avi
Frame rate 25fps
Data rate 848kbps

Currently testing other possible size's, 800x600 etc. and a few sizes that are not 4:3 aspect. As well as other Rates and Formats.
After compressing a Mpeg2 clip, into Mpeg1 often didnt change the quality alot, yet made a difference on file size.

MPEG2 - 640x480 / 720x540 25fps/deinterlace/Mpeg2 -Pal.
(double compression)
Original Mpeg2 convert to Mpeg2/over mpeg1. at 640x480 res.

*thats running at 31secs at 6.8mb, and the clip mentioned above is 4secs at 3.9mb.[/i]
Anyway, I shall make a post if anything shows up.

Hey dada77,
yeah no problem, there should be a large selection available from memory, maybe try a search for free video editing, see what shows.
If terms of best, often adobe or sony vegas is mentioned. However there are lots of options.
A free program for windows is Windows Movie Maker, often bundled with winXp.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/default.mspx

Here is some links to others, I have not tested these, however look to be free.
http://www.zs4.net/, http://jahshaka.org/
this one looks to work on a simple timeline, and has a 30day trial.
http://www.deskshare.com/vem.aspx

The programs I use are,
Adobe Premiere
Arksoft Showbiz
Dazzle / Fast.
Roxio / Sonic
Media Forge
and some other plugins.
Premiere will cost some coin, yet a great program.
Though the video editing card I purchased cost me around 2,500.

And to answer your last question.
Well I would say Mpeg, yet it would depend of if the player of the game has the correct codecs, this has to be tested further. So as far as efficiant format, I would say AVI as it would be more in use.
There would be pros and cons to both.

@dada77, No worries, and good luck with that..

Oh, haha. Yeah thats a Dazzle video editing based card (firewire,s-video etc) I was refering to, I also run a nvidia graphics card.

*often onboard/graphic cards can handle editing fine, however stepping up to various editing programs can use a additional video editing card for different reasons, often import and exporting of digital and analog signals.
Your 8800GTX is graphics. And very nice too.

Have a good 1.

@dada77, sorry to reply again. I'll try to make this the last message.

What I meant by import and exporting is video footage via a video editing card, not graphics card or digital file.
Such as recording footage from a video camera to pc via firewire (firewire card or video editing card), then export the finished video via firewire, lets say back to the video camera, or via composite/s-video to a vhs player.

If you were referring to importing and exporting digital clip file types (avi etc.), this will depend on the program you use. Not your graphics card.

My guess is, if you can play the file type on your pc, and the video editor you use can read/import the file type to edit, you should be fine.

And yeah, no problem.
