you could make a plain with the sprite as a texture, make the background black for transparency.

when it comes to trnsparency i think a color not used to often is the best.
like:

its a pink color that is almost never used.

but as for using plains with the sprites as the texture im not sure how you would animate them.

er! just use the sprite!, thats what I do, make a sprite and position it on the screen, works here, sprites in pro are 3D plains anyway (with the z off IIRC), and I just use black as the background colour, why wouldn`t I?, am I missing something here?, have I just made myself look silly? <re-reads posts> can`t see what else you could mean, I use sprites for crosshairs, huds, decals etc, that is what you mean..yes?, now I`m confused (not difficult to do I admit ), if you mean you want a 2D object inside the 3D world (so it has a Z component) then use a plain, you can animate them by "play animation to image" and then "texture object" with that animated image, or by repeatedly swapping the texture (slower), you cant use DVD streams as animated textures though, something to do with protection I think, they just run in the top left of the screen, but avi work ok and should work, depending on the effect you want and if that is what you meant, cheers.

Mentor I think he meant sprites as in 2d flat characters or objects that you can move around in 3d space, like the bad guys in DOOM - in which case I personally would use texured plains as suggestted before. Actual scaled sprites can be a nightmare to implement properly.

Both those games are 2d Isometric games. The engine to manipulate and test collisions is pretty clever Many RTS games used to use that type of system too, but all these genres are slowly starting to use 3d graphics, like Warcraft 3. Personally I think they should stick with the 2d, it works well and the detail levels are often very beautiful.
