Hi all

Just bought DBPRO and huge book 'Beginners Book to Darkbasic Game Programming'. Never written a program before and hope it's not difficult.

A. Do I have to download these patches whenever they come out?
B. Do I need to get this IDE update and why. It says that I need to install it before 1st October last year!!
C. Do I need to buy any other programs in order to create some good looking games or will DBPRO be the only one I need?
D. I take it that I can just ignore all references to the original Dark basic in the book as I have the PRO version!

Are there any games in the shops that people have written using DB?

Finally - thank you to anyone who helps with these questions.
It's only humbug if you let it be so!

Hello...

I'll be blunt; Programming can be difficult - very difficult. That said, it's one of the most rewarding things you can do. If you are *totally* new to programming, then that book gives some good advice at the start on how to think and approach problems, if I remember correctly.

A. Yes - very much so. They mend anything that might have been broke with DBP
B. Yes, as with A. Don't worry about dates - just patch it
C. While learning, you won't really need any tools. After a while though, you'll want to use things more advanced than spheres/cubes, at which point you'll need modelling/drawing/leveling software. I suppose we should start a sticky thread titled "free tools", to help newcomers find what they need. I don't know which free tools are worth using tho....
D. It's still useful - you get a feel for the language

I'm not sure about commercially released games...

Enjoy!

That book will help you whith what you need to make a game.
because its your first time you may think darkbasicpro is hard to learn. you just have to get the feal of how things work. Me i learnd by looking at other peoples code if i hade that book when i started
ide be a much better programer.

things you should buy

DARKMatter
CShop

darkmatter you have some modles pre animated.
cshop you could make your stages. "very easy to learn".

just take a step at a time you wont programer in a few weeks
it will take you some time to get a game going.

Depending on the size of most projects you will need a lot of media. Some projects require heavy programming. I have only one piece of advice for you on the programming side of things. Program as little as possible to get the task done!. You may or may not understand what i mean or why but you will do

You should put that on your display Mnemonix

"Program as little as possible to get the task done!"

It only makes sense, because you don't wanna confuse yourself with loads of codes, too much codes can mess the game up, and too many codes could slow the game down.

Well, that's how I interperate it and it makes sense if you think about it.
