I've been working hard at putting together a good portfolio to help me get into college. I decided to record the process I usually go through of creating a 3D character, starting with conceptualizing in photoshop, then modeling in Wings 3D, texturing / rigging in Max, and normal mapping in Zbrush.

Just want to make something clear, this video isn't FOR my portfolio, its just documenting the process I took in creating the model... in case anyone wanted to see. I wont be showing this to admissions directors .

Click here to watch Part 1 of the Character Process

(Parts 2 and 3 should be coming soon.)

Feel free to comment and rate the video, the more views the better .

Looks sweet
Nice video as well. I had no idea Wings 3D was so powerful.

I must admit, your one hell of a Photoshop artist.

It looks great RUCCUS. I can help perhaps in your presentation comments. Unfortunately many people [such as the ones looking at and judging your portfolio] equate incidents of cursing with immaturity. I know, I KNOW, that such judgments are foolish, BUT it is also a very real sticking point.

I don't know how much trouble it would be for you to do this, but if your intention is to have art professors look it over then I recommend that you go back and remove even the moderate obscenities.

Also, instead of pointing out your weaknesses -- such as cheeks, for instance -- simply state that you are correcting faults in the cheek areas. Oh, and remove the reference to laziness. That is nothing that an art instructor or professor wants to hear from the mouth of a student. It's good that you pointed out that you had only two days [I think that was what you said] and so the work was necessarily rushed and therefore a rough in nature.

What can I say? It's a great video segment and I like your music selection as well. Really, only your written script needs tweaking, I think; and then only if it would not require a great deal of extra work on your part. Overall . . . excellent!

Eternal student in search of knowledge. But will settle for the occasional epiphany.

No... Im not using that video FOR my portfolio, I was just documenting it while I modeled it. Im just using the model in my portfolio. I understand where you're coming from... obviously I wouldn't show them that with those kind of comments and that sloppy of a video as a portfolio .

Thanks for the good comments. But yeah just wana clear that up, the video isn't for my portfolio.

And yeah Xeno, Wings is getting better all the time. It now has mesh displacement tools too, like in Blender / ZBrush (obviously not as good as Zbrush).

Yeah, I love wings. A great quick start easy way into modelling.

I'm watching the video now, should be interesting to see how you do it lol.

Edit
Great work man. There's a newer stable release for Wings out by the way, I think it is 0.99.00b, which fixes up a few things that the last one had problems with.

Its also got a new easy on the eyes GUI (well, "easier" lol), now before it sounds too much like advertising lol, I was wondering if you could go into more detail on making the mouth right for animation?

Again, its great work and I cant wait for part two (which I think will help me out the most lol).

From what I've read and seen, (as I've not animated a mouth much before myself), you need to keep a good series of edge loops around the mouth that slowly blends into the eye edge loops... I dont know what else to say through text about it . I guess you'll see more when I show the bone structure of the mouth.

Reminds me of the old guy from Monster House. The mesh did look a bit messy in places though, but looks great rendered.
