3 Dimensional Chat / Adding bones to your models

Hey guys,

I've been struggling with adding bones to a model i'm making. Any suggestions on the easiest way to bone a model.
For instnace the thing I hate the most is that in 3DSMAX u can't just assign specific vertexes to a specific bone. U edit envelopes and hope that all the vertices u want to be affected are withing the envelope. But either i'm not making it right or most often then not the envelope affects more verts then i want.
What is the easiest modeling pack out there to bone? Specially one where u don't use envelopes to affects the verts but select a bunch of verts and assigned them to the bone.

Any sugestion is welcome and if u've got links to usefull-talk-to-me-like-i'm-four tutorials don't exitate to post them.

ye, i have also found max's rigging system to be a PITA, lol.

Blenders bone system is good, everything is vert groop based. blender also supports driven shape keys and constraints, i haven't found a way of doing eather of these in max yet.

the only problem is the .x exporter is quite picky.

if you have any problems, ask, i know blender quite well

You could try FragMotion, it has a freeware version and you just have to live with an annoying smily face.
Its not that bad there's only one, lol.

I love how everyone just tries 1 thing in max, figures its the only way, and stops.

Get this through your heads (you especially Hessius), in Max, theres pretty much 10 ways to do any 1 thing, each way with increasing difficulty and increasing control. The easiest methods are made to be easier to access since they're used more commonly.

You certainly can assign individual verts to bones in max. You can even blend between bones AFTER assigning the verts to smooth things out.

It would take me a long time to explain and frankly Im not that experienced in the first place, but Im just pointing out that max used to be one of the industry standards for decades for a reason (and is only being phased out because Maya, ALSO made by discreet, is essentially max with a new name, look, feel, and tool additions).

Yes it takes some getting used to, but Blender certainly does as well. If you've actually spent the cash to get max, learn it.

That is an interesting point. People give up too easily. I do not understand what happens to most of today's students. For example:

Avoid this kind of thoughts. Each time you decide to explore a different feature you will change your way of thinking. That is the origin of the usage of external UV mappers, for example. Blender has the best UV mapping tools I have seen, but I still see Blender users using LithUnwrap. Why? For the same reason you are now trying to move on from Max - lack of actual interest in studying the main package completely.

Max has a more than excellent manual. Have you checked it? As Ruccus said, if you can afford Max, you can study it. It it is definitely worth the price and the effort.

Actually the 3DSMAX I use is my brother's. He spent the money so Its no skin off my back switching between packages. But yes MAX is an excelent package but i've tried way too often to learn how to bone in max just to give up out of frustration. So this time I'm aiming at looking for an easier to use package since i can't get my head around the bone > skin modifier in MAX.

@ruccus: Just off the top of your head do u remember what modifier u used to assign individual verts to bones. Was it the skin modifier? I've never used physique coz i thought it wouldn't be compatible with DBPro. What other modifiers are there to make character animations :/
I'm thinking of going back to the good old method of individual mesh for each limb like in the good old DBClassic days if all else fails.
