Hey, I'm new to the DBP scene, however I'm quite profficient in the Studio Max world. So, as you can imagine, Im anxious to get rocking on some basic 3D games.

Anyways... I downloaded the DBPro Demo and I've been using that until I decide whether this is worth it or not... but so far I've come up with nothing when trying to load even a basic cube I made in studiomax.

If I dont load the object, I get a nice matrix plane where I can run around... however when I load the object the screen goes black for a second... and then I get an error. (And I know it finds the file to load, because if I type in a made up name for the .3ds file, it doesnt even make it to the black screen)

Thanks for any help...

Hi there,

You should know that .3DS files do not work very well.
You are better to convert that file into a .X file instead.

Or you could even use the command

"MAKE OBJECT BOX"
OR
"MAKE OBJECT CUBE"

I hope that helps ya.

Alright, well first off... "make object cube"... sure... makes a lovely cube... but its not about getting a cube in my program. I need my models from .3ds to load. And converting it to an .X file sure sounds all fine and dandy, except I haven't found any converters nor any good plug-ins to make that task nice and simple.

So... I come back to the question. What am I coding wrong... that my 3D model saved as a .3ds file... isnt loading in Dark Basic???

Check out the source code from my initial Post to see what I had coded.

Thanks for your reply nevertheless Vulcan...

Hi there,

I'm also quite new to DBPro and use 3ds max R3. I had quite a few problems with 3ds files at first but here's what I discovered:

1, The DBPro Demo is RUBBISH.
I have used DB Classic for some time and found many of my old programs wouldn't work with the demo version of DBPro, especially ones which used 3DS Models. Even simple code failed to run. I've since bought A full version of DBPro and downloaded all of the updates. That solved all of my problems.

2, Even the fully updated DBPro will not display 3DS objects that contain any limbs without UV mapping. They load in ok, just don't display. So make sure all of your objects contain UV mapping and you're laughing.

3, X Files load 10 times faster than 3DS Files. There are several plugins for max that will export to X files, but i found none of them retain animation data correctly. Your best bet is to download the DB Classic demo and find a program called DBConv.exe (in the tools folder) copy and run it in your models directory and it will convert all your 3ds models to X models.

Hope that gets you going.

(Buy it, you won't be dissapointed)

As I said .3DS files do NOT work very well and that is why errors may occur. If you could tell us what error you get and maybe able to help you more. I have looked and ran your code without the object and runs perfect. So I can only deduce that your .3DS file doesn't work.

I have found a .3DS to .X file converter for you, so you should try it and see if that works for you.

I hope that helps you out.
