if the weapon doesnt currently exist but could be possibly explained using a mock scientific explanation. an example would be a laser, plasma gun. Or even a automatic shotgun with explosive armor piercing bullets. just get creative.

The AA-12 is an automatic shotgun with grenade rounds, so don't bother using that idea.

It's an awesome gun though

Barretta X-Treame is a gun which exists now which is rather hi tech.

Jackhammer would be futuristic if you added some funky indicators.

Take an old gun and make it more curvy

Something sleek and plastic looking in nature can work. Think of the 1950's styling with a year 2000 flair.

OR . . . you could go the technology grunge route, with big, bulky looking hoses attacked to a body composed of pipes and fitted with gages and pressure release devices.

Base it off existing stuff. Mix and match. Try to make something from scratch and it'll usually look fake. Look at the stuff in Aliens. Pulse rifle and the smart gun. They're made from bits of guns and camera equipment stuck together. Probably the best scifi guns ever. There's loads of gun designs that you can use as inspiration, some of which look futuristic anyway, or use relatively unfamiliar concepts.

Have a look, do some sketches, mix and match, make it look badass!

I think the best sci-fi weapons are believable, like in BF2142 or Halo's human weapons, they operate as if they were real.

Personally I'd base any weapon on an existing weapon, like take a Carbine or an M16 and reinvent it, consider how ammo would be deployed, how the gun would react when being used, what moving parts it would need, how it would eject a shell if it has one.

You should relish this stuff though, probably one of the funnest parts of game development.

From the posts here it seems like attaching a primitive weapon to a existing weapon you then have a Sci-Fi weapon, Interesting...

Ooo, I was playing Battlfield 2142 today and they're right, they are believable weapons. I have recently been making some sci-fi weapons for FPSC and this is my advice.

Think about what material a gun in the future will be made from. Wood is a no no so stick to metals and plastics. Most sci-fi weapons look shiny but to make believable guns, don't make them look naff.

Think about electronics and lights. Ammo counters and other numbers on little LCD screens give weapons that futuristic look.

Think where the magazine would be situated on conventional firearms then move it around to a new location like behind the trigger, in the hand grip, to the side of the gun or on top.

Put some new grips (vertical or horizontal) around the stock.

Add some complicated looking optics or scopes.

Make the gun look heavy. Small flimsy looking weapons don't feel as futuristic.

Design a new charging handle or system, like a pneumatic hatch that opens so you can slide a magazine in.

Use different sounds like pneumatics etc and gun sounds with and added sci-fi kick.

Have the gun use different ammunition like plasma or something.

Give the muzzle flash a different colour like red, green or blue.

Hope this helps.
