yeah but alot of the distro's are actually the same companies that software companies also use ... i have a few written down somewhere from when i was trying to sort out someone to actually have our CD's created - even the big names don't do it inhouse, most are just A&R really.

Now you're confusing distributers with manufacturers.

not really... manufactures distribute to the nessary retailers through standard package companies, e.g. DHL, Fedral Express, Royal Mail, etc..

I'm gonna explain you the winded ways of the music industry- in this case with an independant label:
So we have an indi label, an artist, a publisher, a distributer and a manufacturer.

- A label contracts an artist.
- The label gives artist money in order to produce an album.
- The artist records an album.
- The artist signs deal with a publisher, or the artist publishes themselves or the Label owns a publishing company
- The publisher represents the interests of the songwriters and works to maximize the revenue of its catalogue of musical compositions.
- The label signs one or more distribution contracts with one or more major companies.
- The distributer contracts manufacturers to make cds
- The distributer is responsible for most of the promotion stuff like sending cds to radio stations etc. (besides distributing, obviously- to big retailers and other, smaller, local distributers)
- The label is responsible for most artist-related promo stuff like touring etc.

There are many variations mainly depending on the music style but this is the generasl terminology.

So in your Evanescene example we have:
Label = Wind-up Records
Artist = Evanescene
Publisher = Wind-Up (EMI is trying to get a sub-publishing deal)
Distributer = BMG in America, Sony internationally
Manufacturer = many in several regions

Too many lazy lawyers and mobsters are getting a piece of the action for doing absolutely nothing but being 'connected'.
The price of a CD should be about 50¢ per 3 minute song with guaranteed minimum 50% going to the artist.
I hope the present corporate structures go out of business.

for a software title (and actually how Raven Ltd. -> FMTau Labs LLc is having it done)

is Developer >> Producer >> Publisher >> Retailer

Developer: Raven Ltd (makes the actual product)
Producer: FMTau Labs LLc (makes sure everything is in order and provides the support, creates the manual artwork and such)
Publisher: Electronic Arts Inc. - EIDOS PLc - Virgin Records (these guys setup the manufacturing and produce the actual packaging and media)
Retailers: Game Ltd/Electroniqué Boutique - CompUSA - PCWorld - Amazon Online - America Online/EA Games - Virgin Megastores (actually sell the product)

i mean Manufacturing is done in-house within these three companies, and Distribution is done via respectable companies suchas DHL - Fedral Express - Lynx Transport - etc...

can you tell me exactly what each area of your industry is doing what and when... i mean as Virign are producing the OST for our 7DP i figured that all companies would run along the same means as them, as the project producer is a guy from Virgin - this means that technically the production of that is done in-house too although really i'm making all of the decision and telling him to just okay them

i do think the major labels need a good kick up the ass to actually get them back to basics, because they should've noticed by now they make more on the long term artist who the public can spend years getting into than the pop sensations... just look at what SClub7 and such have actually made these labels, all the money they spend is to make sure these people are taken care of just to make more money to get more money... whereas people like Travis just make money continuously which isn't spent on lavish things or trying to keep these people in the media eye at all. people buy their records because they're good not because they're the thing.

guess it doesn't matter anyways, i know that the deals that FMTau have made throughout are to make sure that price is cut for the end user.

A lot of the music i like is from smaller bands and for me if it means forking out a few quid more just to keep them making the music i like it's worth it, people should put a little back!
