Check the 3ds max help file, search for "biped", the answer is right at your fingertips! It will explain it all much better than me or anyone else could. Max's help is the most well-written and easy to understand of ANY app I've ever used.

Then work through the tutorial, "Biped Quickstart", also available from the help menu.

Is it possible to do everything required to create a custom character with Milkshape?

I know custom characters can be made with it but is it an all in one solution like Max or do you need other tools to complete the process?

Bearing in mind Max costs thousands and Milkshape costs $15 I can't understand why anyone would use Max unless their already a professional modeller / have more money than sense or know where a torrent exists that contains the help tutorials.

Seriously though, I've heard people talking about fragmotion and couldnt understand why this was required.

because fragmotion can convert .x files to .ms3d, which can be converted with milkshape.

Thanks Aaagreen

I think I'll give it a try with Milkshape.

I've tried using Max and just sat there looking at the interface feeling stupid for about 10 mins before uninstalling it again.

Milkshape and Fragmotion look a bit more suitable for people that don't want to spend a year learning how to navigate the interface before actually being able to make something.

I much prefer Max to Milkshape. Milkshape is way too simple for my tastes. Once you've mastered the edit polygon functions (edgeloops, cut, subdivide, etc.), you won't want to turn back.

You can infact use gmax. One of the gamepacks has a direct X exporter plugin.
