Would anyone have an experience reading and using 'The Dark Side of Game Texturing' to learn how to texture? Is it any good?

I have the book, in my opinion it's not worth getting. A lot of the output seems substandard compared to today's textures, and a lot of it is stuff you can find in any number of online tutorials anyway. There's nothing really innovative in there that I found, and nothing that I used practically after I read it. It's just photoshop tutorials for creating static images like decals and the occasional tiling texture. It doesn't go over anything like shaders, model texturing, unwrapping, etc.

It's good. Even though the textures in the book are dated, a lot of the techniques he uses are still useful. Don't expect anything related to normal mapping or shaders though. It's geared toward photoshop.

So its basically no good for game texturing then

I want to learn how to shade, colour and build up layers to produce good looking textures for objects and characters. I'm more interested in learning how to create creases, folds, shadows, muscle structure etc.

It sounds like 3D Game Textures by Luke Ahearn is what you're after then. That book goes into detail on building up layers from a simple base layer. There is even a section on creating folds for a banner or something I think.

I have that book, but I thought it would be different with texturing people. Maybe I just don't give it enough practice.

Hold on a sec, I think I know what you're after. Check the last few pages of this tutorial. This is really good way to get good shading on a character without doing normal mapping. I used my own variation of this technique to do the X9 version of my Egyptian characters.
