First entity I modeled. Would like some pointers/opinions. This is just a simple farmer's fence.

I think it looks really good! You might want to look into UVMapping your model so you can make the wood grain go in the correct direction on all sides of the posts.

...from what can see, it looks really good.

I must agree with Luke314pi, regarding the UV mapping. With realistic wood grain, this will be an outstanding addition.

I don't know about you, but the wooden fences around here don't stand up that straight

I suppose it could be a brand-new fence...But if you're looking for something more realistic, try tilting a few of the poles a bit.

I'll have to work on the uv mapping as I am new to modelling and don't quite know how to do that. I'm using Canvas Pro so I guess I can figure it out eventually lol.

Well, here is my first attempt at uv mapping so any pointers on how to do it better would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

i am presuming you use uv-mapper

position the black lines around, and stretch the finishing formation to fit in the whole area. Then, save the texture as a 1024/1024 or smaller. Save the new uv-mapped model, and edit the texture.

Actually I am using the uv map operation inside 3D Canvas Pro. With it I can select any face and individually uv map that face to match the other ones. Trying it again with another style wooden fence so we shall see how it comes out.

Here's the latest attempt at fence modelling. The lighting is sketchy but that's cause this laptop doesn't like alot of stuff running at one time lol. Opinions are still greatly appreciated.

...nice work.

Are the side panels supposed to be one large, single piece, or individual components? It looks a little odd as one big piece, especially with the light coming through around it.

If multiple pieces, I suggest inserting some seams, where the pieces meet. Light would be coming through at those points.

It's a really good looking fence. It's a fine addition, to be sure.

well it was done as segments. The main part of the fence is comprised of two posts and two fence walls. The second part is just one length of fence between two fence posts. As for the light coming through, it might be because I didn't line it up properly as I was rather tired after working all day. The only real problem is how to center the entity when it's created so that when you rotate it, it stays right under the mouse instead of moving halfway off the screen hehe. Gonna try a different style of fence today and see how it looks. Keep the comments/criticsm comin hehe. Here's some penguins for all you so far.

Nice fence model, and the uv mapping seems to fit now. But to make it more realistic, try to do some texturework-
a)the wood pattern looks way to repetitive, try to break it up.
b)a real fence placed outside would have faded/weathered parts and dirt in the corners where the posts meet the planes
c)add some detail like bolts or nails where they would be in real life, scratches make it even more realistic.
d) with all of the above, be subtle...

I hope i didn't run all over you, you did good work to here, so keep it up!

have a penguin for that, too:

cheers

I am Jacks complete lack of surprise.

Nice fence. Texture could look a little more worn down, though.

...nails, environmental wear, imperfections...

They're all crucial in making it look like it's in the real
world.

It's an outstanding effort, and a really good start. I really hope that you release these in some form. They'd look great in any game...

when i get the nails and texturing down I will see about releasing them. Most likely for free since I doubt I could sell them lol.

...great to hear that you're planning on improving the textures, and plan to release them.

Don't sell yourself short on the quality. I think it's a very nice thing to offer them free, but if included with other items, these could very easily be sold, at a modest price, in a pack.
