I'm using 3d studio max to create a model using splines and adding a surface modifier on top of that to create the surface. For some reason the normals get fliped from one direction to the other. Is there a rule for which direction the normal faces or some way to fix this problem?

Attached is a preview.

Isn't there an invert normals modifier you can put on the stack on top of everything?

Maybe it has something to do with the first vertex of the spline?

In any case, can't you just add a normal modifier on top to flip the normals the correct way? I haven't used surface tools much though.

Actually you can do that on the surface modifier itself but the problem is that only some of the normal are being effected. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong when putting the splines togather.

Is the first vertex the one that is yellow? If so that could explain a lot.

add a normal modifier at the sub object level to flip just some of those normals
