I have just picked up an old Amiga 500 with loads of software for a fiver

Is there any way to link it to a PC hard-drive? I only ask cos I'd love to install all the software and use it as a viable alternative to my PC for everyday work, just for a laugh Ahhh Workbench! If so, does it need to formatted a certain way and is there a maximum size?

Secondly, are there any good sites where I can download software and games using my pc then copy them to single sided disks and use them on the Amiga? What about disk formatting etc.?

not that i know of... Amiga's worked on SCSI (which is why they were so damn'd expensive, and the A500/500+ used external connected HDDs either through the Serial Port or DVP on the left side (just pickup and look you should see the little port to grab off where it goes)

there are some trapdoor boards which add proper SCSI to the A500/500+ but i'm not sure which as i never had one for it ... the A600/1200's were better if you wanted a HDD really as they had everything builtin for it (when you look at how they allowed you to update your tech you might realise why Amiga went bust lol)

if you do get one then Workbench should be able to be installed on it, would have to get out the manual again to figure out how cause it ain't easy with anything under 3.5

the disk format for the Amiga was a little weird, 740kb ... you can use a std 1.44 for it and an XP machine should recognise the format (its surprising to know what support they actually put into windows regarding the amiga software)

not sure about software though - i could try to find some for ya, they're a pretty small knit community now so shouldn't be hard to find out alot of information quick as its just the total hardcores problem is finding a community in the first place hehee

http://uk.aminet.net/aminet/ is the uk site for the Aminet archives which has literally tens of thousands of amiga games and utilites and demos. They are in lha format.

I have an amiga 1200 and copying between amiga and pc is made easy but how you do it with a 500 is anyones guess.

its the same format Sonic, just would take longer with a disc drive ... suppose he could setup a Serial Link - would require a little AmigaC for a workbench interface and C for a Windows interface.

Cool, thanks guys

Hmm I think I might try and get an A1200 and hard-drive from Ebay, this 500 doesn't even have the 1Mb upgrade It was still a bargain tho, and has certainly spurned my Interest in Amigas once more

Maaan I love Lemmings games too much

I've got a Hard Disk in my A1200 and workbench boots so quickly.

If you love amiga lemmings so much, why not install amiga emulator on your pc, 'find' a lemmings rom, and play it on your pc.

For all your amiga accessories ... also you'd be better off with an A1200, dunno why you got an A500 but nevertheless, you will be able to run very old games that wouldn't work on A1200. I got an A1200 with internal hard disk and 68030 + FPU expansion card plus tons of software in the loft.

The A600 and up (1200 etc) has IDE the older A500 requires a different HD IIRC there is a hard disk attachment that can be put on the side of the amiga 500 but I would recommend if you get one getting a bigger PSU too .

I would go the emulation route TBH as Amiga hardware these days is very rare.

Amiga have never used IDE... they've always been a SCSI system, even the A5000 uses it - it makes it alot faster, but also alot more expensive.

I beg to differ, the A600 and A1200 both have a 44 pin ide connector.

My A1200 has a 3.5" 170MB IDE hard disk in it with a simple converter to convert from 44 to 40 pins.

that'd be some trick... IDE/EIDE uses 40pins, SCSI uses 44,50,70
i can assure you they don't use IDE, not even remotely

No.
IDE cables for 2.5 inch devices (ie in an A1200) have 44 pins, IDE cables for 3.5 and 5.25 inch devices have 40 pins.

http://www.amiga.com/products/A1200.shtml
That's the original site, so don't use any lame excuses like
"this is fake", "I have an original a1200 with an internal SCSI HDD" or stuff like that.
These are the facts- live with them.

As empty says, A1200 has a 44 pin IDE connector designed to fit laptop 2.5" drives, but you can easily squeeze in a standard 3.5" 40 pin IDE drive. Power is got from elsewhere in the amiga. I could take apart my A1200 and take a photo to prove it, but I'm not gonna!

Just do a search on google and you will find LOADS of info about ide interfaces in amigas.

scsi comes in 25,30,50,60,68,80

see here for piccys: http://www.scsimasters.com/cguide.html

lol Please tell me you didn't actually take appart your Amiga to prove that

I do know that Amiga 1200s can take Laptop 2.5" hard-drives cos my friend had one. I personally tho have no idea of the difference between IDE and SCSI other than its to do with speed. Personally I don't care. However I AM getting a yearning for one of those A1200s with 10Gb harddrives from eyetech,

I am 100% sure it's an IDE drive ... I remember I ordered an IDE Seagate drive which I fitted myself using the 3.5 -> 2.5 converter cable ... it is not SCSI because SCSI drives were very expensive in those days ... additionally SCSI drives were mounted externally then.

A fiver is not bad for all that stuff ... my parents wanted me to sell the A1200 because of the space all those disks and accessories are taking in the loft, no way am I selling the A1200 cuz me too attached to it.

what do ya mean in those days... a small 10gb will still set you back £130, the only consolation is that it is over 2x faster than an ATA/100.

and i'm telling you it was impossible to use an IDE the OS just wouldn't run them until after Amiga went bankrupt. So even if you could fit them it'd of been a waste of time - you just couldn't go out and buy an IBM compatible HDD and plug it into your Amiga, why do you think that small 200Mb HDDs for the Amiga were £400 instead of £250 that IBM Comptible users had them?

Look at sonic's pictures. It says WD Caviar 1170 on the HDD. That's a common HDD used for PC compatibles as well.

Eh? A 10 gig SCSI drive for £130 in 1994? Where you get this figure from? My 20 gig IDE drive cost me over £200 in 1994 and no way couuld you buy a SCSI drive for £130 then ... if this was the case, I would have bought it instead. Here's a website which shows prices of SCSI drives ... look at figures for 1993 - 1995 for major brands (prices are in US dollars and compare the price per MB column and the size in MB) :-

http://www.jcmit.com/diskprice.htm

As far as I remember, the ONLY way you could use a SCSI drive on an A1200 was using an external interface (such as the squirrel interface from HiSoft UK, who are still trading today - http://www.hisoft.co.uk/). I used used the squirrel to attach a CD ROM drive to my A1200 to read my Aminet CD collections.

erm, now you realise 'workbench' is Amiga GUI right ?. Obviously not.

A600's / A1200's / A4000's came stock with an IDE controller.

Then again, since were all delusional bare you, here's a little reading on the subject.

Get Premier Manager for the Amiga 500! I spent 24 - 36 hours (forgot how long exactly but it was over 24 hours) on that game when I was 8, suprised I didn't pass out or anything, maybe it was because of the ghost/spirit visit I had that day. (Yes I get visited fairly often won't go into that you'll just call me a freak (but we've seen your Buffy post in Sam's "I made a forum search" topic, we know you're a freak)).

The Amiga is dead! Long live the Amiga!!

WinUAE (Great free Amiga Emulator for your PC. See Amiga Emulator and Amiga Emulation FAQ for more info on emulators.)

Amiga Forever (Nice Water anim for your mouse to wade in, at top left corner of site)

Cinemaware (Ahhh..Wings, one of my favourites. Better known for Defender of the Crown)

Black Crypt (Raven Software's first game on the Amiga - have gone on to do PC titles like Soldiers of Fortune 2)

Laser Squad - Nemesis (Remember the original Laser Squad or the X-Com series?)

Back To Roots (Old Amiga Games)

Home of the Underdog (Old Games in general, mostly PC versions though, from the "Golden Years")

P.S.

A500(+) = External SCSI
A1200 = Internal IDE (but as I remember, HDToolbox software treated it like a SCSI or something wierd during installation setup)

AmigaDOS (OFS) Disks had 80 tracks and 880k capacity
Use CrossDOS to create a 720k PC disk for transferring files.(Useable on A500s as well as A600s & A1200s, though to get it as standard, I think you had to have Workbench 3 or greater)

It's funny that you should mention this game being played too often, and causing you to have illucinations. I have often said in the past that this game causes bad headaches because every time you exit a screen it fades the image out, and back in again like a Fade/Wipe. That explains your ghostly visitors.

Sorry, saw this from another post . . .

Some systems use boards that can assign a SCSI ID to an IDE hard drive. Apple Performa 6x00 for example. It doesn't take full advtange of SCSI (obviously), but most users who would want an IDE on a SCSI system know the deal . . .

Raven m8, I have a 2.5in IDE Hard disk in my A1200 the extra pins of the IDE connector are power pins. So the A600/1200 has IDE.

Where's Raven's follow-up posts? There have been more than three replies since his last.

Is he . . . conceding . . . slinking away . . . trying to find a document that proves the 44-pin laptop drive just being called IDE but is actually SCSI . . . ? (Save this one, because the Performa 6x00 used a straight-up 40-pin IDE, and gave it a SCSI ID.)

Damn photography, anyhow. White papers, schematics, diagrams, PDFs . . . Damn them all to hell for making information so accessible!
