If you have lots of hot programs like I have but they are at the legacy marker what I plan to do is simply to save Max meshes by exporting them as .3ds files then import them into GameSpace, which was very inexpensive in comparison to 3DSMax, then save those as DirectX .x files.
I built a pretty hot development and 3D animation enviroment quite a while back and of course the tools still function fine but many of todays formats that are used do not exist in my older tools. In fact I also have the very very old 3DSR4C1 with the dongle that runs in MSDos6.0 with what I believe is every single IPAS available including the freebies. I started way back further than I want to admit.
