Hello all,

Well, after alot of thought and planning, i have come up with a game i will want to make.

It will be a MMORPG style game, but what software do i use?

I have had a look around, and the best so far is Realm Creator, does anyone know any decent things like this.

I am willing to pay money, but under £50 if possible.

Thank you.

You know, there isn't a game creator for everything. You might actually have to learn programming

Made a few simple mods for HL2, so yes.

So you think i should rethink what game type to make?

Though, i dont.... i have been looking and i have found loads of MMORPG makers.

yes sharkie, making a couple of mods is one thing, programming a game from scratch... thats another. Start with something smaller ( alot) and work your way up. Most mmorpg makers don't give you much flexibility.

Realmcrafter is incapable for making a good mmo, there is no "easy path" for making a game, you have to work your way up, learn how to program, get a team etc.
There is never a "make a world of warcraft" button

I'm reading a book right now called "Programming Role Playing Games with DirectX." It's over 1000 pages, and the example game at the end looks like this:

Yea. Don't think you'll be able to make your own MMORPG just because you made a few mods. Try recreating Pong or something first to get the hang of programming. There are plenty of free compilers out there like Dev C++ if you want to get into something more advanced, otherwise stick with FPSC like the other kids.

Umm I don't think anybody here can afford Hero Engine. I saw a guy on the RC fourms who bought that. It cost about $500,000 for a one commericial game license.

Ya, and even if you did manage to buy it you'd probably spend more time learning how to use it than actually making anything with it.

Will TGC release Realm Crafter? Didnt knew that.
I have Realm Crafter Pro, or 2 or 1, or all of them. Dont know since the version change all them time when I use it
But it is a good engine, but quite gard to learn but it is based on the DarkBasic scripting, but made a lot easier they say.

Gard should be Hard.
I thought it was like FPSC. No programming for the basics.

Sharkie, do not try to make a complex game with simple and limited tools. You will end up frustrated and will not make the success that your effort deserves. You will have to put much more effort if you decide to learn programming, but you will gain flexibility.

Off topic:

I agree with Venge, mainly because:

1. The word "Gard" obviously does not fit in the sentence;
2. The keys "G" and "H" are close;
3. English is not his first language;
4. You peculiarly emphasised an insignificant mistake, which makes me think that your intention was far from helping the community.

But, if you are his English teacher, that was a very nice attitude.

If you're going to go around and correct punctuation, then you'll have a very job, the vast number of society can't even get the apostrophe right, just look at many product labels.

It is usually good to let it slide.

Though typographical errors I think is sillier to pick up on, we all make bloody typos. I even make grammatical, I am 100% sure 'knowed' isn't grammatically correct, yet I've made such foolery on more than one occasion. Does you language matter on a forum as you can convey you message clearly enough?

----

On topic:

An MMORPG creator, well Realm Crafter seems to be the current cheapo on people's lips, I don't know what it's like, judging by the number of games, it's probably not an ideal number.

Unfortunately there isn't a 'game maker' for every kind of game out there - heck not that many game makers are featured or flexible enough. MMORPGs are one of those complex game types that requires a lot of work and a game engine that would successfully handle an MMORPG with powerful features would be quite expensive and will even then have some level of scripting involved. You do have the Torque Game Engine, which was used for an MMORPG and you can buy and MMORPG starter kit with it, but the scripting system I consider quite hard to get your head around.

I think your best experience would be to pick up Dark Basic Pro and work your way towards such a project, if programming isn't for you then unfortunately somewhere along the road you'll need to choose a compromise, personal control? Easy? Price? Stability? Licensing? etc.

No, not at all. I'm fairly good when it comes to English as I've written articles for many publications over the years and never use a spell-checker because I'm very hi-tech and use WordPad for everything!

Apostrophes don't generally cause me problems either, but when typing, as the odd typo can occasionally slip through for anyone it's not wise to pull others up over it...

I'm quite easy going unless it's text speak - which I detest.

And the only thing that really bugs me is the fact that the majority of our American friends don't seem to realise the difference between 'than' and 'then' - generally getting them the wrong way around!

Yes, I know that's a sweeping generalisation and that not all Americans do it. It's just that most do...

But, as you say, it doesn't really matter what or how you type as long as the rest of us can understand what you've put.

[Edit] Oops - forgot to say...

I think a lot of the time, people are in a hurry and simply don't read what they have typed before hitting the Submit button.

His location is made clear. Plus it's pretty obvious that gard is a typo of hard (even in the context it was written) - why make the comment? I don't see it being very helpful - I thought it quite snide and I hate seeing snide remarks.

But what the hey, just avoid things like that in the future, you might offend someone - as we have dyslexics, people who aren't fluent in English and people who type quickly or miss the right key - it can be annoying being picked up on the slightest little thing, I mean that's what wives are for.

I would just learn programming if i where you:

1: It is very fun to learn it
2: You feel more pro
3: You have alot more flexibility to go as far as your own imagination! Ok, that was kind of lame... But atleast time and imagination is your only limits!
4: There are some MMO creators out there but they arent really good...

Your choice though

By re-programming the Eclipse Engine you can get some nice results, however... its a 2D engine based on Direct X7... not something most people want to play.

Sorry, but if you wanted "easy" you shouldn't try to be a game designer, no offense. Even FPSC is hard, if you want to make a "good" game. But have you tried Multiverse? http://www.multiverse.net/ It's free, easy(ish), has a good support system and did I mention... IT'S FREE!?! It's also a pretty solid engine, though it has a few clipping issues. I don't use it, though. I'm currently making 2D MMO called Forgotten Nights, which is harder than it sounds... But I digress. Realm Crafter is the biggest load of, lets say dookie, I have ever seen. And Multiverse even comes complete with alot of stock models... Though you won't need them if you read my last thread: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=129277&b=3
I hope that helps

Why would you want to make a mmorpg, anyway? PEople can get into your computer more easily with a mmorpg... (well, that's what my dad said)

Ehm... That is completely wrong Bloder, as most mmo's use external servers(Not personal computers)there might be some way to get into those(even though I think there isn't) but no where near your own computer which is most likely hundreds of miles away

If someone says "pls" because it is shorter than "please" I say "no" because it is shorter than "yes"...

Actually XsniperX is making a MMORPG Engine in DBP, and he has only been programming DPB Seriously for about 2 years if that, and his engine has amazing graphics, particle system and can hold a decent amount of people. so DBP is up for it, but it needs some C++ for servers and things to make it stable and decent.

Also, all that about realmcrafter being crap and all. Hardly it is a excellent base to base a mmorpg, but to get anything of real decent quality you need a team of programmers, modelers, and scripters for instance, check out the mmo in my sig Mech Tech is using Realmcrafter for a beta practice test (were moving up onto commercial mmo engines now) and realmcrafter has supplied us with a excellent base to begin our demo and then to progress it further, what you can do with RC is the same as what you can do with any engine, it can do as much as you are willing to make it do. im in the Realmcrafter source group so i can access the source for whatever editing need be.
I Hardly think it suitable going around flaming about realmcrafter when Jared( creator of RC) Has put tons of his time and effort into creating one of the best beginner MMORPG Platforms in the earth for any indie MMO.
So please unless you own a copy of realmcrafter, know how to use it well and can use it then dont go around flaming it. i bet half of you people flaming it havent even tried it. its no worse than FPSC, Graphics are worse but the toolset and overall quality of the entire engine is excellent.

XsniperX has produced screen shots but not an actual game, just renders and has not worked on it for awhile, don't know what that means though. Also Realmcrafter can make a mmorpg now that its server code has bin changed dramatically. The only down point at the moment is the graphics, but you can easily edit the source and add some current features to the old DirectX 7 based rendering engine. IF you want DirectX 9 you'll have to wait for Realmcrafter Professional, which is in Private Beta Testing at the Moment.

Also Realmcrafter Standard (Dx7)will be sold on TGC Store not Realmcrafter Professional (Dx9) unless this has changed since Dragon made the announcement.

If you are looking for a low cost engine and without using any programming (Besides scripting quests....but theres wizards for that even surprisingly) then Go buy Realmcrafter. Also if you buy Realmcrafter now you have a free update to RC Pro when it is released.
