Get a 8600GT or up. 8400GS doesn't work well.

I know for a fact if you use an 8600 with 256 MB of RAM you can get some good results. There's a thread s4real made where he posted some vids of it.
Stay away from the 8400.You can get an 8600 for under $100.

RIP Floating Skull unknown-2007 we will miss you in FPSC x10

I tested it on my 8400, and it works fine, as long as you do not use those fancy silly shaders. Which take up 50% of your framerate...

If you use Bloom on an 8400, the little 80FPS will drop to about 20, and become almost unplayable. Fresnel water does the same, but if you keep all the effects away, it works perfectly fine.

Back to my good 8800 though... But not for FPSC, no no. It was nice for the time I used it. But programming is alot better

Actually, bloom doesn't slow down the Resource speed that much. With mine, it went from 60 to 58, with shadows enabled aswell. The refractivity and reflectivity both on will slow it down, yes, but it works at the best price for an 8 series

i have Geforce 8400 GS too.

The life is standby ... So decide for you'r target and then you'll see that you are arrived and get it.

Are you sure it's the card? When I use TAB to check my stuff I find that I still only sue half of the card's memory or so.If there are issues with your game's performance and you are not using all of the memory in your card it could be x10.
FPSC (either version...original or extra next gen) seems to develop problems specifically related to one's pc.In other words you can run FPSC on 10 different pcs and get 10 different results.
x10 seems to run more uniformly across pcs.
I am sorry to hear you might have to get another card.
On the bright side your pc didn't fry so it could have been worse and the price of cards are dropping all of the time.
I had to get the card I got because it was the only x10 card that would fit in my machine.
But when I get done building my UberComputer it will be state of the art...for about 5 minutes until the next batch of stuff comes out...

As like PCs, GPU's have processors that load and output the textures.
The 8400 doesn't have so many, thus preforms decently with all effects turned off. It's not just the memory.

That is true, every DX10 games runs fine with a few effects on, only FPSC X10 slows down alot. But then again, so did V1 when it was released on most PC's.

I run Bioshock at 1280x1024. I'd like to see a 8400GS do that.

it will run, but not at the highest quality of graphics.(with highest quality, it will run anyway, but with 1 to 3 frames per second... but it will run it)
