Does fog cull the engine from drawing in items behing the fog that cannot be seen?
If not, thats a good mod to make, that way one can have large outdoor areas, just make sure to put fog in to limit what is drawn by the computer.

Make a quick map that has a lot of entities (to make your fps go down), then try the fog out and see if it improves performance.

No it doesant, sorry. The fog just colours walls, floors and objects to add a realistic atmosphere, it doesnt really act as fog.

The fog WILL clip the objects out of the rendering pipeline.

However, merely drawing the objects to screen is NOT what lags up your game, it is the processing that takes place to manage all the dynamic entities' scripts, physics, etc.
