I can't seem to get DarkBasic Pro to work... at all! (Well, I did
make a simple program:

DO
Print "Yo"
Loop

Work. But aside from that it crashes or freezes!

What I'm trying to do (Currently...) is simple get it to load an
image.

LOAD IMAGE "gui.bmp" ,1

(I think thats the proper spelling...)

But instead of loading my image it just freezes!!! (I'm running it
through the F6-Debug) after several minutes of waiting (A LONG TIME!)
I tryed the trusty CTRL-ALT-DELETE and was informed after I took part
of DBP offline (Not all of it, all was not responding.) that I'd run
out of memory? (I have more then enough Ram & H-drive space. to load
this. It worked in DB!)

The image is a 600X480 bmp.

I'm also having troubles with the compiler crashing and giving me
some kind of odd error. (I'll post it here next time it does it.)

Someone please help me! I'd really like to get this thing working!
(I have DB, but DBP's interface looks is so much easyer to use...
if it ever WORKS!)

Have you downloaded and ran any of the demos?

That would eliminate the possibility that your machine is unsuitable i.e. not enough memory, No graphics card etc.

I am assuming you are running the demo

You system seems more than enough
I think I added confusion with my reply

I meant try Downloading already compiled demo Programs such as the lab (from they Downloads section of the site). If they run o.k. try reinstalling your DBP

Wow! That ran amazingly well!!! (Really, an amazing demo!)

Near 10 Seconds to load, but well worth it. (I don't mean the program
loading, I mean to load the program.)

Ok I got slow downs at two places, just after the logo vanishes at
first and just before it gets to the space cylinder thingy. (Every
things very white and glowy, looks like partical fountain hell!)

Everything seems to run fine.

I got an error at the end but the ReadMe said I would and that I
should ignore it.

Here it is anyway. (Starting after the 3 Error!s)

(ERROR! ERROR! ERROR!)

Should I try another demo to test my hard-ware compatibility?
And if so, which one? (The fact that it ran, and so well, is

OH NO! DAMN!

Ok, when it worked so well... I ran the demo's .EXE
not the source in DBP...

I just tried the source in Debug-mode. As with my simple
Load Image command, the screen froze. I could still move
my mouse, but nothing responded. After 2 minutes the mouse
changed from a pointer to the text selecter mouse cursor thingy.
(So it's not frozen persay... just moving at a very very slow speed?
WTH!) after 5 minutes more I managed to get it to click the exit
debug mode and close the program with out any problems.

Any idea what is causing this???

I'd just like to add that I'm running DBP off a complelty clean
system. I just re-formated and reinstalled everything (OS, Sound,
Graphics. That includes updates.) less then 24 hours ago.

The only "weak link" in your system appears to be win 98 SE. I do not know if this is a problem.

Anyone else running 98? Any known issues?

The best advice I can give is unload & reload DBP and the ide.
Before you upgrade to the latest patches run the basic programs then gradually upgrade to the latest while checking for errors

Alright...... I'll try that.
Where can I get the older patches?
(I actualy haven't been able to get DBP to run right from the start,
I've been with it since patch one hoping something would fix my
problem. Only recently came off DB to give DBP a try again and hope
V4.1 had fixed it... This freezing thing is new though, I think.
Usaly the compiler just crashes.)

Well thanks for try to help Codger.
maybe, as you said, slowly patching it up will help me find whats wrong.

I'll keep hoping that someone knows whats wrong though while I work
at that... If I can ever find the patches. (I think I got 3 burned
to a CD somewhere around here... maybe 2 but I don't think so.)

sounds like you don't have DirectX installed or rather not the right version.

http://www.microsoft.com/directx

download DirectX9 (you'll need it for Update5 anyways)
that should solve your problem

I regret to say, I already have DirectX 9 installed.
(And the compiler crashes with earlyer DBP versions happened with
DirectX 8)

Uninstall DBPro from your system

Install the latest video card drivers for your video card (www.ati.com)

Make sure you have the latest version of Direct X (9.0a) installed

Install DBPro from the CD
Install Patch 4.1 (not 4.0) for DBPro

Compile your programs Make EXE/RUN by hitting F5 on your keyboard.

See if you can do all of these things and see what happens.

I had problems with my radeon drivers when I first got it , causing dbpro to crash regularly ,taking the whole comp with it. Try reinstalling them even if you already have the latest ones, it worked for me

(Exeat: "Just a question, why are you always running things in debug mode?")

Isn't that just letting DBP run it without creating an .exe? Does it
do something else as well?

(Bltz2dbpro: "Uninstall DBPro from your system

Alright I'll try putting it back in. (I already have Patch V4.1 in)
Ack... getting the ATI drivers is going to be a pain though. They
stopped supporting the Radeon 7200 so it isn't in the newest driver
download, if you install that. Gibberish will begin appearing in C:.

How is compiling it differnt than running in Debug mode?

(Evil Noodle "I had problems with my radeon drivers when I first got it , causing dbpro to crash regularly ,taking the whole comp with it. Try reinstalling them even if you already have the latest ones, it worked for me")

Alright. I'll hunt some drivers.
Which Radeon card? And what kind of crash?

(MrTAToad: "Have you check DXDiag ? Its amazing the number of people who refuse to run that, even when their system isn't working properly.")

Where is DXDiag located? (How do I run it?)
And what exactly will it do?

(*Dashes off to attempt to make DBP run.*)
Thanks for the advice.

Alright I just tryed to compile the source file that came with
'The Lab' demo. And this is what happened.

Step by Step of what happened:
1. Clicked Compile/Run (F5)
2. DBP statis bar appeared and filled.
3. Screen went black.
(Mouse was still able to move, but nothing else seemed to respond)
4. I waited just over five minutes for some sign of activity.
5. Hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE Twice, blue screen appear, returned to
windows instead of restarting, used 'Close Program' window to
terminate DBP.
6. Returned to desktop and posted this.

I'm going to try hunting down the ATI Radeon 7200 drivers next.
(I have to uninstall DBP before I install the drivers, Right?)

...in Windows.

*sigh*

I do presume you know where the Start button is ? If so, press that (its marked 'Start'), and go up to Programs or All Programs. From there, locate Accessories. From there locate System Tools. From there enjoy the splendor that is know as System Information. Left-click on that (right clicking is a definate no-no). Then, move your pointing device (ie mouse) over the Tools line. Left click on this. Move your mouse (carefully) down to DirectX Diagnostic Tools. Hence from there, the joy that is known as DXDiag will be loaded and run.

My card is a a sapphire 9700 pro ,I installed it with the drivers on the disk , then updated with the latest on offer from ati home page , I started getting crashes in games and using dbpro it compiled maybe once in ten and when it did there was major problems , sometimes a system hang sometimes a bsod with no error message and sometimes an instant reboot. After reinstalling the same drivers all problems were solved.

2. Press start, execute und then dxdiag and it will start itself (as it is in one of the system paths) and run all Direct3D / DirectDraw Tests.

ok I have a good idea what the problem is with this.

LOAD IMAGE "gui.bmp" ,1

copy this into the DBPro file you were working on with loading the bitmap:

try that. If it doesn't work then you have a serious problem. But if it does then I will explain, why.

First off, I do know where the start button is...
I just missed System Information when I looked through
Programs>Accessories>System Tools the first time.

Alright I've run DXDiag and it says every things 100% functional.
(I've run all the tests.)

I tryed running:

But I got this error:
Runtime Error 506 - Could not load image at line 6

The source file was saved in the same directory as gui.bmp,
so shouldn't it have worked?

Yes, the bitmap is in the same directory as the source code.

2.
Hmmmm. I'll have to check on that. I think ALT-TAB was frozen,

Try compiling the code to an executable first (F4), then go make sure that the two files are together. (Sometimes when you compile with F5 or F6 it compiles to DBPro\Temp) Or in your code you could use a SET DIR right at the beginning to make sure you're in the directory with the image.

This is weird, but for some reason it works for me, if there is a sync on command at the start of the program remove it, and then run it again. It probably won't work but give it a try anyway.

Alright, I tryed removing Sync so the code looked like this now:

(CODE)
sync rate 0
fastsync
hide mouse

load image "gui.bmp",1
do
sprite 1,0,0,1
loop
(END OF CODE)

And compiled using F4. The executable ran (I think) and the image
did appear.

I than tryed this code to see if it had frozen before:

(CODE)
sync rate 0
fastsync
hide mouse

load image "gui.bmp",1
do
sprite 1,0,0,1
Wait 1000
END
(END OF CODE)

The program closed without displaying the image.
(It opened and closed really fast.)
So I changed the code to this:

(CODE)
sync rate 0
fastsync
hide mouse

load image "gui.bmp",1
do
sprite 1,0,0,1
Wait 5000
END
(END OF CODE)

It froze, nothing. No image. No End. Frozen.
(I also tryed:

(CODE)
sync on
sync rate 0
fastsync
hide mouse

load image "gui.bmp",1
do
sprite 1,0,0,1
Wait 5000
END
(END OF CODE)

But it was the same, frozen.)

Hmmm, compiling it without running it out of the editor actualy
works, slightly...

Still need some help here since it's not working yet.

I meant - is the graphic in the same place as the executable ?

For the second example, it would exit as you had no corresponding loop command for the do statement. Instead, replace the do section with :

DId you try pressing F5 to run it? Also, is "gui.bmp" in the same directory where you have your program saved?

please, tell me how do you run this:

if i insert this in DBpro editor and hit F5
an error "Could not close nest at line 9" is displayed and the program doesn't run...

so if you can run this piece of code then the problem may be a wrong installation of DBPro/IDE program..
