Description
This a rhythm game I've been working on for a few weeks. It is almost complete. The only thing left to do is add songs and a way to lose.

The gameplay was inspired by "Elite Beat Agents". In case you are unfamiliar with "Elite Beat Agents", here is the instructions as they appear in-game:
Quote: "Have the pointer inside of the note while the shrinking circle overlaps it.

Clicking on the note is not necessary.

More points are awarded for being closer to the middle of the note, and for not missing notes.

An arrow will indicate the direction of the next note."

The final game will consist only of music made by myself ("Brn2Die").

Credits (ABC order):
Brn2Die - Music
IanM - Matrix1Utils
Mike Musson - testing and ideas
Thomas J. Knowles (monocoder) - BG Effect
Torrey - Enhanced audio plugin

Song List (ABC order):
As You Are -
Back Then -
Breathe -
I Said -
Priceless -
Waiting -
Wake Up -

Downloads:
Ripple Demo + "Breathe" - 6.21 MB

Screenshots:

Several songs will be included with the game when I release it, but I would like to continue releasing songs as I make them. This will allow players to pick and choose what they want to play, as well as cut down on download size.

If you have any questions or comments, I'd be glad to hear them.

Thanks,
Erik

Thanks! I hope you can still agree with that statement after you've heard the songs.

I did too, although in my opinion, Ripple "feels" like a different game (could be due to the fact that there's no touchscreen or clicking/tapping).

Hello,

This is still being worked on, but I am currently trying to improve the editor so creating songs is easier.

Right now, the song plays and you have to record the song live. It works, but it is hard to get notes at the right time and location. Making mistakes is common.

I'd like to release an editor with the game, but I'd like the editor to be a bit more usable before doing this.

If anyone has an idea for it, let me know.

Sincerely,
Erik

Hi,

Here is how the editor looks at this point.

The mouse snaps on to this circular grid making it easier to precisely place notes.

Right now I'm looking at the possibility of getting a video of some gameplay in hopes that it will generate more interest in this project.

TRACKS ANNOUNCED!
I am growing tired of working on this, so the initial release will consist of only seven songs. Those songs are (ABC order):
Quote: "
As You Are
Back Then
Breathe
I Said
Priceless
Waiting
Wake Up
"

P.S. If you are a musician, and are interested in having a song or two of yours featured in my game, please e-mail me. Include the song in any format and album art if you have it.

Sincerely,
Erik

you could do what frets on fire does, publish the game with only 3 or so songs, and then just include the editor. frets on fire has a huge fan collection of songs that people can download, so that they have a lot more than 3 songs.

This is my WIP, not even ready for a WIP thread yet though.http://smallgroupproductions.com/

It's called Jinga (I believe) - Really nice video recorder. Even does uploading to YouTube for ya.

@flashing snall
I agree.

(general thought to self)
I wonder if there's a way to analyze the sound tracks then build the notes off of those.

I will consider this, although that would mean I either have to 1) Polish the editor, or 2) Release it as it is

Cool, I'll look it up.

As far as I know, it is possible, but not with the plug-in I'm using for audio.

If the video recorder that Aaron mentioned works well, I don't see any reason why I shouldn't have one up in a few hours.

Erik

If you figure out the maths, you'll be able to analyze it with memblocks, or can't you do that with the plugin? I dunno though, haven't looked in to it.

I have connection problems so I can't upload videos to youtube for some reason (Either through their web interface, or with other software). But the recorder works well, it's pretty fast IMO, and it's completely free.

Hi,

Unfortunately, I had no luck with the video...

...so here's a demo instead.

It includes 1 song called "Breathe".

Have fun, and please leave feedback.

Hi,

Today I added a new screen to the game which appears after a song is completed. It displays some statistics about how you did.

P.S. How did you guys like the demo?

Erik

What I thought of the demo?

Well, lets start with that the screenshots looks good.

Then, let me reinstate that the following has nothing to do with the quality of the game itself.

When I start the demo, I get the 'varsity system'. Completely independent of what I do, as soon as I hit 'return', the game hangs with the varsity system still on the screen. This lasts over 20 minutes, and I decided to not wait much longer and I killed the game through Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

This is on Windows Vista. About to try on XP.

Fun, but the mouse is a little sluggish for me. Also the game hangs on exit.

Don't know what your problem is, Tha_Rami, it works for me.

This is unusual to hear. I've tested it across multiple systems so far with no problems. I haven't tested on Vista though, so I'll wait until I hear how it goes on XP. It only takes a few seconds to load on my PC, and it's a 5-year old laptop.

Quote: "Fun, but the mouse is a little sluggish for me."
How is the FPS? (It will show the FPS if "Show Debug" is set to "1" in "The Varsity System".)

Quote: "Also the game hangs on exit."
Again, this is the first time I'm hearing problems with it locking up. I'd like to investigate this further, but I'm not sure what steps to take in order to do so.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Your method of showing what note to click on needs to be changed. It's very confusing trying to figure out what circle goes with what note, and becaue they all overlap it's very difficult to figure out what notes are going to come next. Almost all rythym games use linear motion towards the note to show that you're supposed to hit it, as in the note moves towards a trigger or the trigger moves over a group of notes in a linear fashion. Innovation is a good thing, but I don't think this is a very sturdy method for it.

I've been told this several times. If you have an idea for what I can change exactly, I'd consider it. I based this on "Elite Beat Agents". They use numbers to indicate the order of notes. I considered this, but figured the arrows would suffice.

I'm not sure how long you played the game, but also take into account that you probably wouldn't be able to beat a "expert" song on another rhythm game the first time you played it. In other words, to beat a song in guitar hero on "expert", most people need to learn the song in order to beat it. In "Breathe", I only miss a couple notes, and get "Brilliant" on most of them. I'm not sure if that is because I designed it, or because I've been practicing so much while testing.

I think there will always be people that say it's too easy or too hard.

Another thing I could do, is label a song based on difficulty. Then I could make other songs that are easier.

Thanks for the post.

Try different colored circles for sets, I'd say.

I forgot to mention before that there are patterns that you could learn pretty easily that are used throughout the song. Once you memorize the pattern, it becomes pretty easy.

Quote: "Try different colored circles for sets, I'd say."
I've been able to change the note color for a long time, but haven't taken advantage of that ability. Because there aren't really "sets" like in "Elite Beat Agents", I will try making the color alternate "Red, Orange, Yellow, Red, Orange, Yellow, etc."

Hopefully it will end up like, "I just hit a red note, so I know that orange one over there is up next."

I'll try that out right now. Thanks for the idea Bizar Guy! I didn't even consider using colors before.

EDIT: Just added it, and don't think it made a big enough difference. Now I'm adding a red border around the note that you have to hit, and a yellow border around the note after that. Hopefully that will help.

Here's how it looks with the red and yellow borders. I think it will make it quite a bit easier. What do you think?

I darkened the background so the colored borders stand out more. On the menu screens, the screen is still the same as it was before.

This game is finished, so I will release it in "Program Announcements". It comes with 1 song and the editor.

Thanks,
Erik

P.S. Does anyone know why this thread only had a couple posts? If it's something I did wrong, I'd like to know what to do differently in the future.

Well, your game is fun, its a lot of practice, though!

I think you should have some more songs with it, though. This really won't do the trick for most people.

Thanks for positive feedback "greenlig" and "tha_rami". It's good to hear.

The only thing I've done recently (that I can think of) is add a fade transition when the game switches screens.

I noticed that the download for the demo is broken. If the guys over at "willhostforfood.com" don't fix it in a few days, I'll move it to another host.

Within 24 hours, you'll be able to hear all 7 tracks that will be included with the final release. I'll post a link once they're uploaded.
