My PS2 was working fine just a few days ago, read the CD every time, but now its gone and mucked up completely. I put a disk in, it waits a while, then starts making the same sound over and over again (probably it trying to read the disk), and never successfully reads the disk. It doesn't give a disk read error or anything, it just never reads it.

Its not like it was a gradual thing, getting worse and worse, it just went from reading virtually every time, to reading a disk 1/100 times. I'm thinking that something may be covered with dust (maybe the lens), but I don't know if it is possible to fix, have they made it so that only Sony "£200 please" specialists can fix it, or could I give it a try? But the fact that it suddenly deteriarated makes me think that it may be something bigger than dust . Any ideas?

Thanks

Annoyingly PS2s very commonly do this, I'm not sure why but theres at least one person a week complaining sabout it on Digi. Personally mine just stop reading blue cds or dvds, I've had 2 do that grr

I think there is a more devious thing going on. Remember when PS1's started going all wrong just before the PS2 was released !!!

All those suggestions need one thing that I haven't got.... money. I've had it for 3 years and this is the first time it's gone wrong, so its not that unreliable. I fixed it by turning it on its side like kang said.

Don't forget our friend the emulator. Lots of SNES stuff out there, and no one seems to regulate it. Emus are one of those things like Kazaa . . . A rather shaky pretense for their use.

Also, the SNES ASM is pretty easy to learn and well-documented (although when you start tinkering with it, you end up asking what the hell you think you're doing).

ta hell with the emus nuttin like playin the actual retro systems. Man you emu buffs need to buy yourself a NES SNES Genisis amiga and all the others Emulated. Geez the only emulator i want is B4 (emulates an organ, costs money, not for DL)

Yeah, anyone can have a ROM of "A Boy and his Blob" or "Chrono Trigger", what's really special is actually being abill to hold a working copy of Zelda 2 in the original gold cartridge.

I have an old Genesis, but never play Sega except on the computer. Other people live in the house and would rather have the TV for the DVD player (how's that for not knowing which machines are best for what job . . .). I no longer have an SNES, and am too lazy to make the effort to acquire one.

Heres a hint, either buy 19 inch tv for your self(which i did) or get dvd-rom for your pc and make it the dvd veiwing area(heheehe).

ohh and arrow, the great feeling of holding the gold cartridge of an NES great zelda 2!!!! I wish everyone could feel that(cept you lousy emulator buffs, you can hold the floppy or cd that you put Zelda 2 and paint it gold )

I'm happy with it on my PC.

Runs smoother than on TV, as long as you don't mind the black borders (I refuse to stretch the pixels, because they look like hell then).

TV is rapidly ceasing to be part of my life. I'm looking to buy one of the adapters for TV to monitor when they start making a cheaper version that supports high res for DVD and gaming. But,really, what is even the point in that? Right now, tuner cards are cheaper.

Emulation isn't all that evil.

In a way, it's a strange confirmation of how good the old SNES and Genesis games were. After all, there's a whole slew of PC games out there now that, visually, make the 16-bitters look like nothing.

But, in those days, because they didn't have wow-power, you had to make a good game. Not too many games with solid play anymore.

Zelda 2 was awesome. One of those games you just knew was an all-timer the second you played it.

I felt almost raped when I saw Nintendo make the first 3-D Zelda. Mario was one thing, because they never settled on the style for Mario (remember the difference between SMB 1,2,3, World? From a plumber to shrooms to a racoon to a cape and dinosaur). Zelda was pretty locked in in game style from NES to the SNES.

no i'm on a panasonic 36 inch flat screen, some weird shit, tau or sumthing, looks great to me, you gotta see zelda link to the past on it. Final fantasy 6(the jap version i can actually read it) And final fantasy 2 for NES looks and sounds cool, SMB123 are good on it but not ff qaulity. but most of the time i play on the little one so i don't have to leave my room. Sonic wasn't as good as expected but still nice non the less.

hehee... i always like playing like an hour of Chu-Chu rocket then putting in Resident Evil Zero

the pure jump of graphics makes zero just look breath taking
i used to have a plasma screen, and i'm not sure if anyone else has had one but they only seem to display 256 colours... makes watching things truely aweful

Hamish - stick a CD-lens cleaning kit in it.. see what gives. Also do the "2cm drop test" (if you are). i.e. pick it up to about 2cm off the floor and drop it. You'd be amazed how many things this can fix in consoles and computers. If that fails the 2 meter drop test is more entertaining

There are lots of companies that will do psx repair for well less than the £200 you think it'll cost, email me I can recommend a few (UK).

Cheers,

Rich

burn it to the ground and buy a reliable X-Box.

Your theory stands until some coder writes lazy code and gives the XBox a blue screen.

Yes, the xbox is based around a non-graphical version of the windows 2000 kernel. Fact.

8Truths - I use a monitor type thing (it looks like a TV) with my PS2, it runs as smooth as a PC one.

Rich - So far turning it on it's side and shaking it seems to do the job, but it exremely annoying. I will have a go with a lens cleaning kit and do that drop test. If that doesn't work I will e-mail you. Thanks.

"burn it to the ground and buy a reliable X-Box."

money, money, money... and I like my PS2 anyway, thank you very much.

I'll get an Xbox when Fable comes out, it's my policy to only buy new systems when they're are three game that I want for it. Shenmue 2 and Steel Battalion are all ready out so it's down to one. When the systems are dead its a different story, I bought a dreamcast with Shenmue for $35, though I recently got Jet Grind Radio and Space Channel 5 off Ebay for under $20.

Oh, yes, I got a copy of FF6 for the Famicom too, but I need to get some new wires for the system, it's only coming in B&W now.
