I just wanted to get some comments on my Sniper Rifle. It's not finished but it's at stage one(low poly model)

You might get a better response if you post a jpg, rather than a bmp.

Its a good start, there is a bit too much smoothing going on in places. Also some areas are uneven, might want to sort that out.

Sorry, for some reason I forgot to change it to jpg before uploading.

About the smoothing you mean the edge smoothing(the normals) right? I don't really understand what you mean about it being uneven, could you elaborate a bit? Thanks for commenting!!!

I think its just a bit too smoothed out, areas that should be clean cut and sharp are actualy just a smooth surface.

I modeled this a couple of years ago, the mesh is not perfect, but should give you an idea on what it should look like. I believe its the same rifle, just with a different butt.

Textures pretty basic if you ask me, try adding dings, scratches, some grunge on the bottom surfaces, little artistic things like 5 or 10 slanted small metalic lines running down the length of the side of the gun for grip. Show how the scope separates into smaller peaces by splitting up the texture, draw in the locking mechanisms. Theres lots you can do to improve it.

Yes I know, I am still getting the basics down of texturing, you could say it's not somthing that comes naturaly to me so it takes me alot longer to learn. Anyway the isn't the final version of it so i'll try to add some more details to the texture.

What program are you using?

And will you be releasing this to the community?

Anyways, good luck!

I'm no texture artist, but I'd add dents, and like RUCCUS said, some other stuff. I'd also add some screws...psionic(is that his name?) had a tut on adding screws on his site, I'd check it out. Also, I'd little inlets, and extrusions just to make it look cooler(I think). Looking good though.

This is the rifle that I trained with. I used both the semi-auto and heavier full-auto (bipod) versions.

I still think its a damned cool looking rifle.

FN FAL

FN FAL Fullauto

The second clip shows why you really need a bipod for full auto.

@puppy of kosh

I think PatM is saying he was in the military or something, and he used those rifles.

If you can do any models for FW, reply to the FleetWars thread.

It's based off a a real gun(I forget which one) but it didn't even have a scope. So really it's my own made up gun you could say.

For me you press the middle mouse button to rotate, scroll it to zoom and use the arrow keys to pan.

Don't worry, that's how it is for everyone. Nobody is born knowing how to make amazing textures. Hell, I've been doing it for a few years and I still don't really have it down. Just remember: it's all about the layers.

Yes, I know it will take time. I agree about the layer thing, I don't know how I ever did it without them

Edit:
BTW, I will be posting a "update" soon.

Here is the "update"

Comments and Crits are more then welcome! I will still be keeping and updating the other rifle but I like this one better. A carrot for anyone who guesses what gun it is.

Is the scope leaning out of the sights? Or have I gone weird and that's how it's supposed to be?

I want'ed to wait until I had some of the gun textured and not just the clip but in fear that this thread would get locked if I waited much longer I decided to just go ahead and post what I have so far.

C&C?
