I am trying to get into 3d model making and I need some opinions. what is a good and free:
1)terrain editor(like T.ED but of course free)
2)model maker(I was thinking blender, how is it?)
3) Texture editor and maker
and where would I start to learn about modeling and level making.
thanks in advance.

I have to agree with Hessiess. Blender is basically a great package like 3dsmax(but of course Max is a tad better) but for free.

I would say the opposite, doing anything in max takes forever.

I would not say the opposite, but I would say different. Doing anything in Max may take forever if you do not get used to it. Some people work with Max fastly. I love the way Blender works. I can say that Max's interface is a pain, not being worse only than Lightwave's. But that is still just my opinion. Almost all of the people hate Blender's interface and even hand such power over because they do not want to learn it. And I do not just tolerate its interface, I find it great. It is all about trying what is available and formulating your own opinion.

Max is better than Blender in features. The workflow is not the only factor, because it varies from person to person and there are other important aspects to be taken into account.

Let me hit the key again: this forum could force people to open one or two specific stickies before creating new topics. We can not just ignore enthusiast users because we are annoyied by their lack of knowledge on searching, or whatever.

twitchy 624, read the sctickies. They are the topics at the top of the board. Read the titles and see if any of those sounds useful.

Cheers.
