Music & Sound FX / Is it normal to be able to produce two notes at once with my voice? (not sure if this is an appropriate place...)

I've known now for a while that I can make two notes at once... it's almost evil-scary kinda sounding... think Darth Vader with a normal voice over it

Anyone have a clue? Is it normal?

Thanks,
Jim

can you control it?

check Kargiraa on Wikipedia and this MP3 (esp. ~ 3:00).

also, i listen to Deicide. vocalist (Glen Benton) claims he can do 2 voices (read as "gutterals") at once. if it's true, it's probably something you can learn to control with a (small) bit of practice/exercise (i really doubt he found a monk to train him, so... your mileage may vary ).

and, yeah. this is prolly the wrong place for this.

Well, I figured this is the "Music & SFX" board... maybe I'll post a cut out piece of my voice(s) for a car engine sound? It actually works well =P

better yet, do some short one-liners we can use in games here's a couple i'd like to hear:

"Tonight you sleep in Hell!"

"There can be only one!"

(yeah, so i like the Kurgan from Highlander )

"M M M M M. Martha. Martha Splatterhead!"

(and an Accused fan!)

Wow, I once heard of people having two pairs of vocal cords and
could be activated together to give the impression of 2 voices...
I never thought I would actually meet someone on the forums lol.

I think that the singer in Nitro claimed to be able to do that too... Gilette or something?

Anyways, cool

oh my. NITRO. heh. i hadn't heard that about Jim Gillette (went to wikipedia and no mention found on quick scan through it).

interesting to see Nitro mentioned since i recently saw Batio on a local cable channel (local Rock show). before that, hadn't thought about the band for almost 20 years (since O.F.R)

yeah, if you also google tuval throat singing too

throat singing works in a similar way. Well done though, its pretty hard to do. Metal singers like it a lot. Get into metal music

Gyume and Gyoto monks do overtone chanting, and can use three notes. I can do that sometimes, too...it is part of a meditation. Don Campbell wrote a book about it, and also, check out David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir.

Don Campbell website:

Metal singers usually use diads, as opposed to triads. There is a lady in LA, Melissa Cross...here is a link to her site:

@TSS : That's not bad, but you are straining your vocal chords. You should check out the things I just mentioned. To get two notes, you can lower your trachea after some practice. To get the third note...is usually a nasal overtone (higher harmonic), and you can sometimes just change the shape of your mouth to achieve it. Also, it helps if you have some mucous in your throat. (Gross, but seriously, you can get a higher note that way.)
