Thanks to Zappo, we've got a great backup application indeed: SyncBack. I've added it to the list.

A great CD burner program, while not free, is certainly well worth the money is Clone CD. Also for those huge files DVD shrink is great!

Wow that's one heck of a list you've got there! I'll definitely be looking back to this when I get a new computer pretty soon. Maybe a sticky is in order...? Really it's good info for anyone and is a good geek source, wouldn't want to see it get bumped into oblivion.

Programs I use/recommend:
Notepad++
AVG (You need NOD32 for real anti-virus, but that costs - I used to use this)
Paint .NET (I'm currently using GIMP, but I prefer Paint .NET)
BlueVoda web editor (It's so awsome AND free)
Pidgin

edit
I'll give Digsby a try, it looks SOOO awsome. Pidgin may be replaced on my end

Cheers,

-naota

Going to check into BlueVoda. The reviews of it sound promising.

WinAMP, dear Drew, isn't in the list because Foobar2000 is. With FooAva, it definitely beats WinAMP in terms of memory print, speed and quick music playing.

Digsby is something I personally wouldn't use, nor would people that I know. MySpace and the likes just aren't that popular around here.

Thanks to a tip at work today, I found a new, extremely impressive program. It's a all-in-one system maintenance program, which'll probably replace Juoni Vuorio's Regcleaner. It's honestly a well-built, totally free and extremely efficient program with awesome features, including RAM optimalisation, registry cleaning, temporary files cleaning, dead shortcut cleaner, empty folder locator and much, much more things that effectively combat the slowdown of your computersystem. I'm still checking into the safety of the program for now.

some of the programs listed are FOSS(free open source software), not freewere. The difarance being that the source code is available to anyone, so its highly unlickly to find a virus in a open source program.

Well, it's actually extremely unlikely to find a virus in a normal program at all. Most developers check their software thoroughly for viruses and malware. So do most downloading sites as MajorGeeks and CNET's Download.

FOSS is Freeware (free software) with an Open Source. For the purposes of this list, it doesn't matter how or why its free - it matters its free and works as good as any commercial counterpart.

Foobar2000 for the win! But I'm sure WinAMP is a good alternative to have on the list.

Question, are there any good time management programs? You know ones that'll remind you "Hey you! Lazy programmer, you've got a meeting in half an hour" - if there's any freebies for that, then it'd be good to add to the list as they can come in handy.

That is more like an alarm clock rather than a meeting organizer. Still cool though. I'd like a time thingy.
I'd set a date for the following:

Spore release date
Brisingr release date
Sabriel the movie release date (once the release date is released, but I will also record the release date of the release date)
The year anniversary of my next game, once it is a year in progress
other random crap I can put on there - I want to fill it up badly...

And we went hunting for a piece of PIM software that also works with the increasingly popular iCal files (so you can sync them with Google Calendar and access 'em anywhere). Until now, I've found one program which, I must admit, works quite well. However, I don't like to quit hunting this fast, and will continue to hunt on for an hour or what. After that, I'll post the best program I've found.

I'm still wondering about the program I was talking about yesterday. It claims to fix a lot - but there's not really much of a difference in the speed or efficiency of my PC. I need to run some tests to check the credibility of the program.

EDIT: Had a great hunt and actually ran into three great applications and one application that could be usable for the original target audience. Also, I am now positive that the program I posted about yesterday actually does work. So, four new additions: Glary's Utilities, TeraCopy (must have!), Task Coach and EssentialPIM.

I'm thinking of compiling all this into a single ISO or CD, with an additional installer or the like to allow easy installation (for example, with Foobar). I might need some help on that, so I was wondering if anyone is really, really skilled with automatisation of installations and the like.

Hey that'll be really cool! Especially since I'm getting a new computer soon, and I always forget one small program, which can get annoying!

Yeah, I must say the ease of use is indeed unmatched. Heh, I think I'll install it if people opt out of IZarc, but it doesn't beat that last application. It didn't make it to the list due to that, but I'll recommend it to anyone not wanting IZArc.

Sorry for forgetting to note about that.

I wouldn't release that until you get permission from all the authors. Most of the license agreements will have stipulations that you aren't allowed to distribute the software--- lame, but just warning you.

Yeah, I've been reading through all those to see if I'm allowed to do what I'm planning. I'm more like stitching the installers together, in any case, but if I ever see something like that in an agreement, I'll send a quick mail to the author. It appears most of them are okay to distribute as long as you do not change anything in the file, which I'm not planning to do.

Done. I've gotten written permission from all software creators that required it. Only three of them required that, actually - the rest is GNU or allows unlimited redistribution as long as I don't charge for it. Great - that's done. For now, I've written the installer in DarkBASIC Classic. Now, I should .ISO it and .ZIP it up!

Please, PLEASE let me just write the installer because DBC, and DBP are really very unnecessary for such a thing. I'll write it in C++ with the Windows API and pass you a program to add the files to the installer, just please don't do it in DBC I'm BEGGING you.

Okay. Sure. I'm mailing you a file that'll allow you to see the structure of how I scripted it. I need it to work with that, deal?

lol, when I first read "file" I thought it said "fine." So I was thinking "Why are you making me pay?"

I'll try to make it work with the scripting to the best of my ability. But I was just planning on making it work by you selecting which files you want, and being able to just point-and-click for the most part (Copy in licenses and license groups).

Cheers,

-naota

I've emailed you the file tha_rami, it includes the package compiler as well. Simply place the resulting install_data.bin in the data directory. Tested on Windows Vista.

thread just keeps getting better man, keep it up. Are you gonna host the ISO online somewhere? I have a rapidshare premium account, I could upload it for ya (100mb per file limit though, so you'd have to use winrar to split it up into 3 files or so)

Nah, just kidding. Felt sarcastic . Anyway, of course I will put your nick on it and state I did not come up with it, and then post the link here. At the moment I have some stuff to do, though. Have a intensive week coming (must make an "arcade machine", a game and two videos).

I lost track of what everyone was saying in this post after it sunk off the first page... so I don't know if it's been suggested yet, I didn't see it in the post post so...

TweakUI - A nice tool to customize different settings for windows. Such as what appears in the start menu, you can edit some mouse settings, set an auto login, and a bunch of different settings. It's usually one of the first programs I install when I install windows.

There are a few other nice powertoys on that same page, like "Open Command Window Here", "Alt-Tab Replacement", "Image Resizer", "Virtual Desktop Manager", and maybe you'll like some of the others.

A quick and meaningless comment about Trillian... with Yahoo! Messenger you can add your MSN buddies to your friends list. I'm a YIM nerd though, lol. In my humble opinion, it's the best IM service on the web, so long as you're running the Beta . Depends on what you want it for though, hehe.

I'm downloading a few of these now, thanks for making this list . Add SUPERantispyware to the list... in my most recent experiences, it's the best antispyware on the web. Kills spyware, adware, malware, and viruses, and it's 100% free . Of course, you should have a few different programs of course, nothing finds everything, but this finds more than anything I've used to date, even Trend Micro, which is paid for lol.

Heh, with MSN you can add your Yahoo! friends to your contacts list. However, with Trillian and preferably the Astra version, you can actually mix ICQ, MSN, YIM, AOL, G-Talk, Jabber and more together in one spicy application. That's why it's currently top of the list.

I'll check out SUPERantispyware and check if its worthy .

Have you stumbled upon any good book keeping programs? I'm not looking to do taxes on anything fancy with them. I'm just looking to keep track on what I spend money on and my bank account and maybe run some statistics on it.
